The Phases of the Moon Ivy Rose B. Recierdo BSED 1-A
The Lunar Cycle The Moon revolves around the Earth once every 29 days.
When less than half of the moon is lit by the sun, it is called Waxing Crescent Waning Crescent CRESCENT.
Waxing essentially means "growing" or expanding in illumination; Waning means "shrinking" or decreasing in illumination .
When more than half of the moon is lit by the sun, it is called Waxing Gibbous Waning Gibbous GIBBOUS.
happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. An exact half of the moon is illuminated and half in shadow. First Quarter Third Quarter HALF MOON
Eight Moon Phases
New Moon The half of the moon that faces away from the Earth is lit and we only see the dark half. A solar eclipse can only happen at new moon.
Waxing Crescent Small part of the moon is lit by the sun but most of it is still shadowed.
First Quarter Only half of the moon is visible from the Earth.
Waxing Gibbous More than half of the moon appears lit by the sun. The waxing gibbous phase occurs between the first quarter and full moon phases.
Full Moon The moon is in one side of the Earth and the sun is in the other. A lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon.
Waning Gibbous The other half of the moon is lit by the sun and we see it looking like a little less than a full circle. The waning gibbous phase occurs between the full moon and third quarter phases.
Third Quarter The left half of the moon appears lit and the right side of the moon appears dark.
Waning Crescent The moon looks like a crescent. It signals the beginning of a new cycle.
The phases are divided into 4 groups or quarters : - new moon - first quarter - full moon - third/last quarter
Tides The rising and falling of water, at the seashore. Occurs every twelve or more than hours.
SPRING TIDES When the sun and moon are aligned, unusual high and low tides are observed.
Neap tides When the moon and the sun are right angles with Earth, tides are moderately high and moderately low.
Factors causing Tides: 1. Rotation of the Earth 2. Gravitational attraction between Moon and Earth . 3. Gravitational attraction between Sun and Earth .
Blue Moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season , or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar.
