The moon goes through eight (8) phases
in a span of approximately 28 days.

The new moon is thefirst
lunar phase, when the Moon
and Sun have the same
ecliptic longitude. At this
phase, the lunar disk is not
visible to the naked eye,
except when it is silhouetted
against the Sun during a solar
eclipse.

The Waxing Crescent is the
second phase in the cycle of
phases.The area illuminated
on the surface of the Moon
during this phase is in the
shape of a crescent andthe
amount of sunlight reflecting
off of the Moon is decreasing.
The term waning means
decreasing, which is why this
Moon phase is called Waning
Crescent.

The Waxing Gibbous phase
iswhen the lit-up part of the
Moon grows from 50.1% to
99.9%. It starts just after the
First Quarter Moon and lasts
until the Full Moon. Waxing
means that it is getting
bigger, while gibbous refers to
the oval-to-round shape.

The first quarter moon
occurshalfway between new
moon and full moon. One
quarter of the moon is visible
from Earth, meaning that you
see half of the daylitside of
the moon, looking like half a
pie.

Between full and last quarter
moon –late at night or in the
early morning–you might
catch the moon in its waning
gibbous phase. It'll appear
less than full but more than
half-lighted. A full moon rises
just at sunset. But a waning
gibbous moon rises later at
night than a full moon.

The full moon is the lunar
phase when the Moon
appears fully illuminated from
Earth's perspective. This
occurs when Earth is located
between the Sun and the
Moon. This means that the
lunar hemisphere facing
Earth—the near side—is
completely sunlit and
appears as an approximately
circular disk.

A lastquarter moonlooks like
half a pie. It is also called third
quarter moon. A last quarter
moon appears half-lit by
sunshine and half-immersed
in its own shadow. It rises in
the middle of the night,
appears at its highest in the
sky around dawn, and sets
around midday.

A crescent shape is a symbol
or emblem used to represent
the lunar phase in the first
quarter, or by extension a
symbol representing the
Moon itself. In Hinduism, Shiva
is often shown wearing a
crescent moon on his head
symbolisingthat he is the
master of time and is himself
timeless.
