The History and Evolution of Basketball
Basketball is a super popular sport played and watched by millions. It's known for being
fast and exciting. But have you ever wondered where basketball came from? The game has
changed a lot since it started.
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical
education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. His boss asked him to create a new indoor
sport. The goal was to keep students active during the cold winter months. Naismith needed a
game that was fun and safe to play inside.
Naismith used ideas from other sports like soccer and rugby. He also used a children's
game called "Duck on a Rock". He made 13 rules for his new game. The first game used
peach baskets as hoops and a soccer ball. Every time someone scored, the game stopped so
the janitor could get the ball. Later, they took the bottoms out of the baskets.
The first public basketball game was played in 1892. At first, there wasn't a set number
of players. One of the reasons that early games were played with nine players on each side
was because eighteen students showed up for Naismith's class. In 1897, they decided that
each team should have five players.
Over time, the rules of basketball changed. For example, at first, players couldn't come
back into the game after leaving. But in 1945, they changed the rule so players could re-enter
the game as many times as they wanted.
The equipment also changed. Peach baskets were replaced with wire rims in 1892. Then, in
1893, they used cast iron rims. Nets were added in 1912, which made the game faster.
Backboards were added in 1895 so fans couldn't mess with the game.
Basketball quickly became popular in colleges. Then, the professional game started.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) was created in 1946. It has become a huge
business and a big part of American culture. Basketball is now played all over the world. It's
