Introduction The health of the community members is relevant to a Public Health Nurse and therefore more knowledge and skills has to acquired With reference from WHO’s definition of health, the public is paramount to attaining full health

Definition of Public Health The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting mental and physical health and efficiency through organised community effort

Definition of Public Health Nursing Public Health Nursing is also a branch of professional nursing that uses the available resources in the community for the promotion and maintenance of health, prevention and control of communicable diseases not merely the care and rehabilitation of the sick

Objectives of Public Health Nursing 1/3 To; Provide antenatal, maternity and postnatal care Provide under-Five‘ Clinics (Child Welfare Clinics) Organize clinics for the treatment of minor ailments, referrals and health education Conduct family planning clinics Teach the correct use of common medicines and drugs and the dangers of self medication

Objectives of Public Health Nursing 2/3 To; Explain and promote the use of local health services in the community Promote the development of community projects that will improve the peoples lives Teach and demonstrate healthy lifestyles Support in the prevention and control of communicable diseases Conduct home visiting

Objectives of Public Health Nursing 3/3 To; Promote the health of school children through school health service Promote the health workers (occupational health) Promote and maintain the health of the elderly and handicapped Work in close cooperation with government, non-governmental and other local organizations to promote the health and welfare of individuals, families and communities

Principles of Public Health Nursing 1/3 Self introduction to the community and other health team members Survey area to acquaint self with important landmarks Review previous literatures if any to identify existing problems Understand the people‘s way of life- traditions , beliefs and other ways of living to identify useful ones and discourages harmful ones Address health needs of the people

F unctions and R esponsibilities of the Public H ealth Nurse 2/4 M ake periodic and continual appraisal and evaluation of health situation in the home, family and the patient Knows where and how to get aid- financial, legal, food, clothing and other social services D irect patients to make use of the available social services in the community

F unctions and R esponsibilities of the Public H ealth Nurse 3/4 Is a member of the health team e.g. Helps the hospital nurses to see their responsibilities in providing comprehensive nursing care and continuity of care She establishes community activity The community is exposed to all kinds of health teaching but she selects and emphasizes the best teaching the community needs

F unctions and R esponsibilities of the Public H ealth Nurse 4/4 Provides on-going staff education, as well as student education with written procedures to be followed Directs patients and clients to have the appropriate resources. Such as finance, nutrition, clothes etc Liaise with clients, families and the various agencies which provide related social services

Summary Public Health Nursing is a multi-disciplinary profession Equips the professional with skills and knowledge
