PHOTOSYNTHESIS

WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS? PHOTO MEANS LIGHT AND SYNTHESIS MEANS TO PUT TOGETHER. BUT CAN WE SAY PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS THE PROCESS OF PUTTING TOGETHER COMPONENTS TO MAKE LIGHT? WELL, I DON’T THINK SO. NOW LETS EXPLORE THIS CONCEPT TOGETHER AND UNDERSTAND ITS MEANING.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS … the process in which green plants, in the presence of sunlight, makes sugars and starches from carbon dioxide and water.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS…

How does it happen? The leaves of a plant take in sunlight which is one of the requirements needed before photosynthesis can take place. Sunlight is then used to make sugar which comes in the form of food manufactured by the plants. The sunlight is absorbed into the leaves. The chlorophyll inside the plant cell is where sunlight is stored. After absorbing the sunlight the plant also takes in Carbon Dioxide from the air. After this the plant is ready to start creating the products of Photosynthesis. The plant makes oxygen and sugar from the sunlight and Carbon Dioxide that has been taken in.

CHEMICAL EQUATION : PHOTOSYNTHESIS CHEMICAL EQUATION 6CO2+6H2O=> C6H1206+6O2 SUNLIGHT + CARBONDIOXIDE + WATER => GLUCOSE + OXYGEN TAKE NOTE THAT.. In the photosynthesis equation, it shows that carbon dioxide and water is combined with the presence of sunlight to produce glucose and oxygen

PURPOSE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS T o make food for plants. All living organisms are dependant on the organic molecules synthesised by plants from the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis provides us with most of the oxygen hence we are able to breath. We therefore are able to exhale the carbon dioxide needed by the plants. Plants are also crucial to human life because we rely on them as a source of food for ourselves and for the animals that we eat.

STAGES OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS Photosynthesis happens in TWO stages . The first stage is light reaction which occurs only in the presence of light. The next stage is dark reaction where light is not needed but it can also occur in the presence of light.

FUNCTION OF EACH STAGE Light Reactions Pigments & proteins in thylakoids make s ATP and NADPH “Dark” Reactions Enzymes in stroma decreases CO2 to carbohydrates by using ATP & NADPH

LIGHT PHASE The light reaction takes place in the membrane of grana. During the light reaction, chlorophyll in the thylakoid captures light energy. Light energy, to split the water molecules into hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH-). The reaction is known as photolysis of water. The hydrogen ions then combine with the electrons released by chlorophyll to from hydrogen atom The energy released from the excited electrons is used to from energy-rice molecules of ATP. The ATP molecules and hydrogen atoms then move to the stroma to provide energy and reducing power .

DARK PHASE During the dark reaction, the hydrogen atoms are used to fix carbon dioxide in a series of reactions catalysed by photosynthetic enzymes. The overall reaction results in the decrease of carbon dioxide into glucose. [CH2O] is the basic unit of glucose. Six units of [CH2O] combine to from one molecule of glucose. The glucose monomers then undergo condensation to from starch which is temporarily stored as starch granules in the chloroplasts.
