PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES OF PERSONALITY

Learning Objectives understand the physical attributes of an individual. 2. describe the external and the internal attributes of an individual and the proper function and treatment of each. 3. apply the proper care and treatment to our body based from what we learned.

Introduction Personality development is the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts and interacts with others. Or personality is generally defined as the deeply ingrained and relatively enduring patterns of thought, feeling and behavior.

External Attributes First impressions are registered when people meet. A beautiful face can be ruined by a poor posture or a careless hairdo, although not every pretty face can be set off by well-chosen clothes or meticulous grooming. The external attributes include physical health and hygiene, grooming, accessories, make-up, posture, and the use of color combinations. Physical health and hygiene include care of skin, hair, eyes and the brain; exercise; and nutrition.

Physical Health and Hygiene

Physical hygiene is the maintenance of personal cleanliness and sanitation of the body. Daily body cleanliness consists of: daily bath daily elimination habits eight glasses of drinking water rest, and sleep 6 Air free from pollution and sunshine are also important. A daily well-balanced diet will enhance the skin, brain, hair, and eyes.

The Brain The brain belongs to the central nervous system. The automobile will not perform without the engine, just as the brain will not function without the central nervous system.

8 Provide the brain with good food. Enough sleep, fresh air, exercise, relaxation and positive outlook. Foods for the brain are: 1 . Iron. This helps deliver oxygen to the brain through the bloodstream. 2. Vitamin C deficiency causes mental sluggishness. 3. Vitamin B 12 deficiency result in the impairment of memory. 4. Thiamine (Vitamin B2) deficiency results in depression, emotional instability, and confusion. 5. The B-Complex vitamin is a key to memory function. 6. Protein keeps the brain alert.

9 Exercises for the mind are: Planning and organizing ideas. Memorizing lines of poetry. Learning a new language. Writing about certain subjects a few minutes daily. Reading to sharpen mental skills. Developing skills in problem-solving through puzzle, scrabble and computer games.

Exercise 10 Quite a number of exercising salons are popular in alleviating health problem. Physical health programs can be in the form of aerobics, “dancercise,” brisk walking, yoga, and sports. Learn at least one sport for strengthening your body. Go slowly add gradually move up to the level you aspire to reach older.

11 Exercise helps control the fatty deposits of cholesterol on the wall of blood vessels. It relaxes tense muscles and improves the posture. It also firms body tissues. The person is, the more slowly and gradually he should exercise. Get a tutor to learn the intricacies of the sport and its rules. Warm up at the beginning of any activity and cool down afterwards by walking slowly.

Nutrition A balanced diet is attained when the four groups of foods (milk and milk products; meat and alternates; bread and cereals; and fruits and vegetables) are present in the right proportion to meet the daily nutrition.

Some recommended food habits are eating whole foods and fiber foods; avoiding empty calorie foods and keeping them to less than 45%; avoiding excessive salt; and drinking plenty of fluids. According to Edith Zapp of “Personal Improvement for the Career Woman,” (1975) the following is the procedure in determining calorie intake. Multiply the desired weight by 12 if not too active or 15 if moderately active. Example: Desired weight is 120 lbs. X 12 1,440 -total daily calorie intake needed

Skin 1. Get enough sleep for at least eight hours a day. 2. Keep dirty fingers away from your face. 3. Avoid using heavy make-up and never sleep with your make-up on. 4. Avoid fatty foods, chocolates, and candies. 5. Prevent pimples ~Y observing daily elimination habits. 6. For oily skin, wash your face with soap and water more often. 7. For dry skin, apply lanolin. Some rules to follow are:

A beautiful skin is one of women’s assets and therefore it should be well cared for. A well-balanced diet with adequate vitamins and minerals affects the condition of the skin. Fats, oil, refined sugar and starches restricts the tiny capillaries that carry nutrients.

Dermatologists advise women to stay out of the sun. Sunlight is a major cause of wrinkles and the sooner one prevents them the better. To combat the drying effects of the sun and air conditioners, use a moisturizer to help lubricate the skin. Washing with soap and water is good. Cleanse the skin thoroughly with water and soap that is best for your particular skin type. After using soap and water, use a cleansing cream to take away deep-seated dirt. Wash off all make-up no matter how tired you are before going to bed. Never sleep with make-up on your face. Pamper yourself with a facial and enjoy the glowing results.

Hair Shampoo the hair twice or once a week. It is important that the natural oil is preserved. Vary your shampoo to play safe, and seek two or three kinds most favorable to the hair.

Split ends are caused by dryness. The only cure for them is to cut them off. Use hair preparations for dry hair. Baldness and dandruff need more scalp stimulation. Baldness should be referred to a dermatologist.

Eyes The best physical asset of a person is his pair of eyes. The first organ used as a person’s medium of communication is his pair of eyes. Through the eyes, one can communicate even without words.

Good Grooming

Good grooming means appropriate clothes on the appropriate occasion, besides being neat and clean in every detail when it comes to clothing and the self. A well-groomed girl smells clean and looks clean. Basic good grooming includes being very careful in one’s choice of dresses and accessories such as jewelry and accents; shoes; bags; color combinations; and style.

Dresses A basic dress is one that is simply cut with good lines that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion or place where it will be worn. It is not an outstanding dress that you can easily remember nor is it a plain-looking dress that is too ordinary.

The following are essential in buying dresses: 1 . Good fit . The dress should hang on the body easily. There should be enough room for movement. Anything too tight or too loose will make you feel ill at ease and will reflect on your appearance.

2. Good workmanship . Neat sewing, straight seams, smooth placement of the zipper, collar, and sleeves all these make good-quality sewing. Stripes or checkers should be matched in the seam connection.

3. Good materials . For the working girl, good fabrics are essential because of the wear and tear on the clothes. Those with rosy complexion will look well in shades of red. The Filipina looks well in orange tones. Beige dresses with touches of accents will enhance her beauty.

Accessories Accessories are a must for women. They are regarded as indispensable in the life of a woman to complement her appearance. They include jewelry, shoes, and bags. It completes one’s get-up and accentuates the color of the dress as well as manicured fingers and nicely shaped ears and legs. Shoes are part of grooming. Never sacrifice comfort for aesthetic sense in the use of shoes.

Shoes with basic colors such as black, white, beige, brown, and red are more practical. They can go with any color of bags and dresses. One can be more productive by wearing comfortable shoes. High-heeled shoes are appropriate at important social occasions but not for school and the office.

A bag is used for practical reasons more than to complete the attire. However, its size, shape, and color can accentuate the personality of the person. A bag should never be abused by overstuffing. It with things, since it will lose its shape and may be destroyed in no time at all. Clean and wash your bag as often as necessary. Re-arrange and check its contents every day.

Good Posture

What is good posture? It is a state which enables the body to function to the best advantage. There is no one best posture for everyone. Everyone is built differently from another; hence people have different postures. Good posture makes one more attractive and graceful. It gives a feeling of confidence. Bad posture accelerates fatigue. Good posture may also aid regular bowel movement The functioning of the body system is kept normally operational at all times with good posture.

Psychology of Colors

32 Colors have profound effects upon our lives. They set the mood or ambience. They are outward expressions of how to feel whether lonely, happy, brave, strong, dull, sexy, decisive, or bored.

33 Make Up Your make-up can be· creative and expressive, a statement of your femininity.

Foundation It provides the base for all your glamour cosmetics. It protects your skin from air pollutants and reduces the effects of sun and wind. Foundation makes you look better. It evens out skin tone, veils imperfections, and can actually do your skin a service. Foundation should be as close to your natural skin tone as possible. The shade that you choose should closely match the color of your jawline.

How to apply Cardinal Rule in Application: There should never be a noticeable line between you and your makeup. Blending is the answer to a natural-looking foundation finish. Liquid Foundation . Shake the bottle before use. Place a small amount on 5 facial points. Gently spread with fingertips or dry sponge with easy light strokes in an outward direction extending to the outer corners of your face and over the jawline.

Cake foundation is applied by using a moist sponge. It is essential to make the foundation last for hours and to even out the skin texture. It blots away excess oil and freshens one’s appearance.

Facial Loose Powder . Translucent loose powder seal/sets in the foundation. Pat lightly over the foundation. Buff off excess powder to project that velvety smooth, shine-free matte finish.

Pressed Powder. This is used alone or over foundation especially for retouching make-up. Blot excess oil be-fore retouching face. Puff lightly on face.

Cheek Color . The color and intensity of your make-up scheme is based on your cheek color. It brings out the character in your face by giving bone structure more definition. Color-key your blusher to your lipstick for harmonizing effect. Proper Application for Duos . Use the lighter shade to give the top of your cheek-bone a glowing blush color, and the darker one to contour the area under your cheek-bone.

Corrective Eye Make Up

1 . Close-set Eyes. Widen space between the eyes by using light shadow near the nose. Apply the most intense color near the outer corners of your eyes. Use liner on the outer half of the eyelid only; extend it, with shadow, beyond the eye. 2. Wide-set Eyes. Reduce the space between eyes that are too wide apart by concentrating all makeup close to the nose, stop it at mid lid and leave the outer half of the eye bare of makeup.

3. Hooved Eyes (Bulging). Light shadow under the brow teamed with dark shadow on. the eyelid will flatten protruding eyes. Keep lines subtle; avoid all bright colors and shiny or glossy pearlized finish. 4. Small Eyes. Light shadow on your eyelids opens up small eyes and gives them greater dimension; more in-tense shades in the creases help make the eyes look round and enlarge them. Adding lift to the outer corners also opens and widens small eyes.

Eye Colors Your eyes are the most expressive feature of your face, and eye make-up should enhance this feature that gives your face energy, excitement, and individuality. Use at least 2 tones a medium or deep color to shade, a lighter tone to highlight. To apply . Always start with the palest shade the highlighter shadow. Apply it just under the outer end of each eyebrow and quickly blend the color inward toward the inner end of your eyebrow, above the inner corner of your eye.

Eye Definers: Whereas eye colors add color, contour, and enhancement, lining and defining your eyes emphasize their natural setting and contours and make your lashes look thicker. To apply . Lightly stroke a single fine line under your cover and upper lashes as close to the base as possible starting at the outer corner of your eye. Run the pencil smoothly under your lashes along each lower eyelid to the inner corner of your eyes. To set and blend color, apply powder eye shadow of the same color over the line.

Mascara . Your eyelashes softly frame your eyes, and adding mascara darkens and thickens your lashes to give your eye makeup the finishing touch. To apply . Always hold wand in the way that's most comfortable for you to ensure better control. Brush 2 or 3 coats, allowing drying time between each application. Use wand tip to coat bottom or shorter lashes at corner.

Eyebrow Shaper . Eye-brows frame your eyes and add expression to your entire face. An eyebrow pencil or eye color can help shape your eyebrows. The color should never be darker than that of your brows or hair color. To apply : To apply begin by brushing eyebrows using quick, upward strokes to remove excess foundation or face powder. Use light, short, feathering strokes following the natural shape and growth of your eyebrows.

Lip Color . A soft glimmer of lip color harmonizes your whole beautiful look. Consider colors complementary to your cheek, eye colors, and clothing.

Three simple steps to applying lip color. 1. Outline and define the shape of your lips with a lip brush. 2. Color your lips. Apply the fill-in color so that it blends invisibly into the outline. 3. Shine your lips with gloss.

Tips: Small mouth: Use an intense shade of lipstick. Finish with gloss. Wide Mouth: Neutral, rather than bright shades of lip color are most flattering to a wide mouth. To narrow your lips, try using a darker tone at the comers of your mouth. Uneven Lips: When your top and bottom lips are dramatically different in size/shape, use a light, strong lip color on your smaller lip and a darker, more neutral tone in the same range on the larger one.
