•The size is determined by number of
patient & fund.
•Generally it could be designed upto 12
patient in large hospitals.

•The unit’s physical layout should consist
of individual private facilities.
•All cubicles should be seen from central
station.
•The unit should be air conditioned for
the benefit of the patient, staff &
equipment.
•Sufficient lighting system, natural light
if possible.

•Alarm system for coronary care
personnel to summon additional staff in
an emergency situation.
•Beds readily adjustable to various
position firm based & easily moved from
place to place, have a locking position
for a secure stationary position bed
side railings & easily removable heads.

•Enough space around each bed to make
easily accessible in routine care &
emergency care of the patient & to
accommodate bulky equipments.
•Oxygen compressed air & suction
facilities at each bed side as well as
properly grounded electrical outlet with
independent circuits for each patient.

•Each bed should have track for
intravenous poles & blood pressure
apparatus.
•The immediate physical environment
should be as pleasing & conducive to
recovery with minimal sensory
deprivation.

•An area for tea & coffee for patient
and staff along with private area for
staff relaxation and patient/visitor
counseling.
•Appropriate area refrigeration of drugs
& storage of medical appliance &
equipments.
•Should be neat & clean. i.e moping of
floor should be done atleast 3 times a
day.

Design of ICU/CCU:
•Air conditioning:
Temperature: 24-26oC
Humidity: 50-55%
•Central piping for oxygen, continuous
vacuum & ventilator compressor.

•Electrical wiring for electrical power
plant, earthing & lighting at night.
•Monitoring:
Bed-side monitor, central monitor ECG
monitor, A-line monitor, oxygen monitor.
•Medical machine:
Ventilator, nebulizer, infusion
pump/syringe pump, defibrillator,
vibrator, ABG (arterial blood gas)
machine, Hypothermic/hyperthermic,
ice bags, Anesthetic machine.

•Other facilities such as:
Dirty utility room, clean utility room,
store room, doctors room, injection
trolley & nurses room.
