INTRODUCTION- What is Phytosome ?: Phytosomes are novel drug delivery system containing hydrophilic bioactive phytoconstituents of herbs surround and bound by phospholipids . Phytomedicines are complex chemical mixtures prepared from plants. Water soluble phytoconstituents ( flavonoids ) are poorly absorbed. 17-04-2018 2

Reasons are- 1. Multiple-ring large size molecules - can not be absorbed by simple diffusion. 2. Poor miscibility. Water-soluble phytoconstituents can be converted into lipid-compatible molecular complexes. Phytosomes are more bioavailable . Phytosomes are lipid-compatible molecular complexes. 17-04-2018 3

MERITS- 1. There is a enhancement of the bioavaibility of botanical extract due to their complexation with phospholipid and improved absorption in the intestinal tract. 2. The formulation of phytosomes is safe and the components have all been approved for pharmaceutical s and cosmetic use. 3.
