Piezoelectric Effect By B SRI JYOTHSNA 15011D2003 JNTU, HYDERABAD Soft Skills Lab - Presentation

Piezoelectricity ???

Ability to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress. ‘Piezo’ derived from Greek word ‘piezein’ meaning “push”

Reversible i.e, converse of Piezoelectric effect

Mechanical force Electricity Piezoelectric effect Electricity Mechanical strain Converse of Piezoelectric effect

Piezoelectric Materials Crystals which acquire a charge when compressed, twisted or distorted and vice versa Quartz Silk Enamel Barium Titanate(BaTiO3)

Principle behind this effect ??

When a mechanical force like a vibration is applied on the material it polarizes. when the force is released flow of ions takes place and electric current flows through the crystal.

Applications

Converse of Piezoelectric effect is used in Quartz watches

To detect wear in train wheels by detecting the change in vibration behavior of the entire wheel by generating mode shapes

Gyms, dance floors etc can be laid with crystals below the floor or tiles. This energy can be used to power the equipment in the place.

Piezoelectric Microphone sound sensor sound waves bend the crystal creates a changing voltage.

Used in ultrasonic transducers medical ultrasound imaging Non Destructive Tests in constructions

Piezoelectricity is a source of “Green energy ” Flexible Piezo materials withstand large deformations Conclusion

Thank You!
