PLANETARY MIXTURE Pharmaceutical Engineering (PT-317) Presented By: Sridebesh Ghorui

CONTENTS Introduction Working and Function of Planetary Mixture Application and Uses Advantages and Disadvantages Conclusion 2

Planetary mixtures are one of the most widely used mixtures in the pharmaceutical industry. In pharmaceutical industries planetary mixture often used for basic operations of mixing, blending, and low share granulation. INTRODUCTION 3

WORKING AND FUNCTION OF PLANETARY MIXTURE Mixing mechanism is shear. Shear is applied between moving blade and stationary wall. Mixing arm moves around its own axis and around the central axis so that it reaches every spot of the vessel. The plates in the blades are sloped so that powder makes an upward movement to achieve tumbling action also. Consists of vertical cylinder shell which can be removed. The blade is mounted from the top of the bowl. Mixing shaft is driven by planetary gear and it is normally built with variable speed drive. 4

APPLICATION AND USES Application: Tablet coating Tablet granulation Antacid blends Collagen solution Uses : Break down agglomerates rapidly. Low speeds are used for dry blending and fast for wet granulation. 5

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Advantages: Speed of rotation can be change as per required. More useful for wet granulation process. Planetary Mixer Manufacturers install motors that have higher energy efficiency and speed variation to cut the power consumption. Easy to cleaning and discharge. Disadvantages: Mechanical heat is buildup within the powder mix. Planetary mixers require high power. It has limited size and is useful for batch work only. 6

CONCLUSION Better hygiene and better food safety are guaranteed with the planetary mixer. Product quality is good due to better homogenise mixing. Versatile operations can be done because multiple blades are available for mixing. Lower physical effort and labour required due to automatic operated equipment. The energy consumption is also less which means planetary mixture is also economically beneficial. 7
