Map of Plate Boundaries

PLATE BOUNDARIES Plate boundaries are the lines at the edges of the different pieces of the lithosphere .

T wo T ypes of Crusts a. C ontinental C rust - thicker but less dense . b. Oceanic Crust - thinner and denser.

DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES refer to plates that separate and move apart in opposite directions forming new lithosphere - the young seafloor.

CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES are formed when two plates move toward each other .

Formation of Andes Mountain Oceanic – Continental Convergence

Collision of Eurasian Plate and Pacific Plate

Formation of Volcanic Island Arcs Oceanic – Oceanic Convergence

Continental – Continental Convergence Formation of Himalayan Mountain Ranges due to collision of Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate

TRANSFORM FAULT BOUNDARIES is formed when two plates are sliding past each other. It is also called the Strike-slip fault. Rocks that line the boundary split into pieces as the plates slip at each other. A crack is then formed creating an undersea canyon or linear fault valley. San Andreas Fault is an example of this.

transform faults also occur between plate margins with continental crust—for example, the   San Andreas Fault   in   California   and the North Anatolian fault system in   Turkey .
