Pleats:
A pleat is a double or multiple fold in
a garment formed by doubling fabric
back upon itself and securing it in
place.
It is commonly used in clothing and
upholstery to gather a wide piece of
fabric to a narrower circumference.
Types of Pleats:
.Accordion Pleat
•Accordion pleats are a series of
very narrow and straight pleats of
equal width.
•The width of the pleats ranges from
3 to 13 mm.
2.Knife pleat
Knife pleats can be used as an
alternative for gathers.
These pleats generally have a width of
about 1/2–2″ and are turned towards
the same direction.
3.Box pleats:
A box pleat is formed when two
consecutive knife pleats are folded in
opposite directions – one to the left
and one to the right.
4.Inverted pleat
Inverted pleats can be obtained by
reversing the box pleat.
An inverted pleat is made while
two knife pleats are twisted nearer to
each other in a manner that the folds
meet in the centre on the face side of
the garment.
5.Kick pleat:
Any of the above discussed pleats like
knife pleat, box pleat or inverted box
pleat could be used to construct kick
pleats in skirts.
Purpose of
pleats
The main purpose of pleats is
functionality.
Pleats add extra room in the hip area
of trousers so they tend to allow for
more freedom of movement and they
better accommodate the widening of
your hips when you sit.
This also allows your pants to lay
smoothly while sitting and prevents
creasing or tightening.
Pleats can be found on a variety of
garments and pattern pieces,
including:
❖Skirts
❖Bodices
❖Sleeves
❖Pants
❖Dresses
❖Jackets
❖Pockets
❖Bags, Purses, and Accessories
