OBJECTIVES The participants will : Describe the meaning of pneumonia Explain the epidemiology of pneumonia Enlist the causes and risk factors of pneumonia Identify the types of pneumonia Discuss the pathophysiology of pneumonia Describe the components of pneumonia prevention care bundle List the general instructions in pneumonia prevention care bundle

INTRODUCTION Pneumonia is inflammation and fluid in the lungs caused by a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. It causes breathing difficulty, fever, chest pain and cough with sputum (yellow, green or blood)

EPIDEMIOLOGY Hospital acquired pneumonia (MAP) is the second most common hospital infection. VAP is the most common intensive care unit (ICU) infection. 90% of all nosocomial infections occurring in ventilated patients are pneumonias

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS CAUSES Bacteria Viruses Fungi Aspiration R ISK FACTORS Young children Older adults Underlying health conditions Impaired immune systems Smokers and heavy drinkers

TYPES Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) Aspiration pneumonia VAP (ventilator associated pneumonia) Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia (HCAP)

COMPONENTS OF PNEUMONIA PREVENTION CARE BUNDLE VENTILATOR ASSOCIATED PNEUMONIA(VAP) Head Of Bed elevated to 30’-45 degrees Dally sedation vacation & daily assessment of readiness to wean off DVT Prophylaxis Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis Subglottic secretion drainage Daily mouth care with chlorhexidine
