POACHING Animal poaching is when an animal is killed illegally. It is usually occurs when an animal possesses something that is considered valuable (i.e. the animal’s fur or ivory).

WHY POACHING IS DONE? (MOTIVE) Commercial use/gain Home consumption/ decoration Pleasure and thrill in killing wildlife Poverty ( rural area of united states) Lack of employment (African rural areas) Meat Medicine

POACHING METHODS 1. SNARE WIRE : cables are placed around the trees in order to choke the animal when walking by.

POACHING METHODS 2. PIT FALLS : poachers dig holes in the ground and covers it with leaves or branches. When herd of animals run by, some are trapped .

POACHING METHODS 3. PIN BOARD TRAPS : a long board with dozens of flat iron pins or nails are placed on the trigger system. Animals are usually hurt and weakened and therefore makes it easier for the poacher to kill the animal.

POACHING METHODS 4. SPEARS : dogs chase the desired animal into a pit or bush where the poacher can have the opportunity to kill.

POACHING METHODS 5. ARROW AND BOW : poachers apply poison on the arrow and target the animal to kill .

POACHING METHODS 6. SHOOTING : poachers shoot animals with guns from even very long distance. “SHOOT ANIMALS WITH A CAMERA , NOT WITH A GUN”

PENALITY A general offence under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, attracts a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment or a fine which may extend to Rs. 25,000  or both.
