Make a Change
High School graduation and vacation ends...
Crishel threw a stuffed toy on the pile of things to store. Her room wouldn’t have much
space, and she would only be able to take her most important things when she and her best friend
Orlene, left for college for a couple of months. As Crishel threw her Old tennis shoes on the pile,
her cellphone rang.
“Hey, Crishel. What are you doing?”
“I’m cleaning stuff out, trying to decide what to take and not. Are you taking your
trophies you grab in your essay writing contest? ”. Crishel hoped Orlene would leave the trophies
at home. She planned to clean the room with Crishel but she realizes how busy her best friend is.
“I’m not going.”
Orlene’s tone was offhand. Crishel couldn’t believe what she heard. “But you have to go!
You have a Scholarship!”
“A scholarship won’t help my Dad run the store. Now that Mom’s gone, he can’t do it
himself.”
“But you’re the smartest student in the class.”
“Then maybe I don’t need four more years of school. Look, I called to know if you’re
Okey.”
After Crishel hung up the cellphone, she curled up on her bed and cried. Now everything
was ruined. Who would she tell about her secrecy? There would be no familiar face to make her
feel alone. Crishel remembered momentous bonding with Orlene like how her bestfriend dance
and sing gracefully during their JS Promenade. It was just plain wrong that Crishel was not going
to College.
Weeks went on; Crishel prepared herself to be alone. She’d go to parties and meet all
sorts of new people. And she was planning to advance study to prove that she can also be a better
student like her bestfriend. Then she got a phone call from Bea Paira. Crishel could hardly
believe it that the most popular girl in School had been call. Bea said that since they are both
going to the same college, they should get to know each other.
“I don’t get it,” Crishel said. “You weren’t interested in getting to know me in High
School.”
“Oh, high school,” said Bea. “That’s all over now.”
Bea took Crishel shopping. She showed her which things look good on her and even
whisked her off to a salon to get her curly hair transformed into straight and cut it for pretty look.
As soon as Bea left her, Crishel went to the Hot & Crusty Restaurant, at Orlene.
Crishel looked in the grimy front window and saw Orlene helping a customer. When that
customer gone. Crishel went in “Ta-da!” she said. Orlene smiled, but she seemed tired. Crishel
had noticed that lately, when she dropped her things to show Orlene what she had bought for
college. Orlene didn’t seem that happy to see her.
“New hairstyle, what’s the Occasion?”
“Not just a new hairstyle! New makeup, new clothes, new me. When I got to college I
want everything to be new!”
Something in Orlene’s face changed. “Then you better stop hanging out with an old,
worn-out friend like me!”
“Oh, Orlene! I didn’t mean that.”
“But I did. Leave me alone.”
“But, Orlene let me...!”
“Just go.”
Crishel was confused. She went home and looked at herself in her full-length mirror.
Who was the fashionable young woman she saw there? Crishel’s mother passed by. “Look at you
Crishel! How old are you thirty-five? Haha” she teased.
The next time Crishel saw Bea, she told her that she and Orlene had quarrelled.
“Orlene?” Bea said. “Do you still hang out with her, if I were you; replace her as your
friend because she cannot accompany you now, since she’s not going to college. Look your life
is about to change so better break it off now.”
“Maybe you just can’t understand. I’m sorry but I can’t do what you have been say”
Crishel walked down to her former high school and wandered around. She needed to
think. There was a bench where she and Orlene used to talk at lunch. There was their old
classroom where Orlene had finally made her understand algebra. Crishel remembered how large
and glamorous the high school had looked on her at first day as freshmen. Everything about her
had change since then—everything except Orlene’s friendship. Crishel caught sight of herself in
the Bakery window, she remembered herself prancing around at the Hot & Crusty Restaurant,
showing off her what’s new with her. Crishel blushed. How could she have been so insensitive?
The next morning Crishel waited for Orlene at the door of the Hot & Crusty Restaurant.
As Orlene saw her bestfriend, she felt a little sympathy about what she did last time. But:
“I told you to stay away.”
Crishel swallowed hard, “Orlene, I’m so sorry.”
Orlene opened the door and turned on the lights. They walked into the permanent
sausage-and-potato-salad smell of the restaurant.
“For what?”
“For prancing around, showing off all my new stuff for college. When you don’t even get
to go I was so insensitive.”
Orlene turned and looked Crishel straight on the eye. “You still don’t get it, do you?”
“Please, Orlene! ,......I’m......”
“What makes you and Bea Paira thinks that you’re better than me because you’re going
to college? I don’t need your sympathy.”
“But I thought you wanted to go.” pleaded Crishel.
“I did, but then I realized there were other things I’d rather do—like help my Dad run the
restaurant for a while, save more money.” Orlene looked around slowly, as if taking everything
in. “If you’re not happy where you are, then Crishel, you’re not going to be happy somewhere
else, regardless of what you are doing.” Orlene smiled a genuine smile. “I guess I’m happy
where I am.”
“Orlene you’re great. You’ll never be just someone who hands you your change or be a
cashier.”
Orlene cracked open a roll of quarters. “Crishel, no one is just someone who hands you
your change or give receipt.”
A ray of morning sun had forced its way through the Hot & Crusty Restaurant’s grime-
spattered windows and now illuminated the quarter as they cascaded from Orlene’s hand into the
change drawer with coins.
“I guess we all have to make our own change, in our own way”, Crishel said finally.
Orlene and Crishel were then friends again that day.
Strong Friendship
First day of school in college, I don’t bring much things yet, I only have few of the
requirements needed when entering the University such as Certificate of Enrollment form. I find
my room first and it is easy to locate when you asked for someone that is also a student in here
(Partido State University). I encounter my new classmates but I don’t have yet an interest to meet
them all. I only recognize my former classmate in high school.
At first day, we only have an introduction and a brief discussion about our universities
Mission, Vision and Core- Values and its importance to us freshmen and for all students enrolled
in PSU.
Weeks went on, I accompany someone always when we’re going home. He is nice to be
friend, he is thoughtful and kind and he is also an intellect one. I never knew that he also love
math same as me. Indeed. We’re BS Math student, but we know that some of us just choose BS
Math for they have no choice.
He shared me that BS Math was not on his choices, it just that it comes to a moment that
he didn’t reach the target score in the course he want to take. He choose it because it has
something related in math.
We become now friends that time, we study together and he also let me share copy his
own assignment sometimes. He is really a studious person and that’s the kind of friend I’ve want
to be my partner, but I don’t know if his notion was the same as me, I am really different from
him. I can say that I am an opposite of him.
Time passed by, we always have a conversation—a story about our past high school and
elementary stage. He narrated that he was a bully during his elementary grade, not only by his
co-pupils but also by his teacher. I can’t expect that there are teachers like that, for all I know
they are the one who will stand for whom was right. But beyond such experience he told me that
he is also experienced being acclaimed in class through his kind teacher in his fourth grade. I am
proud of him and I really needed to believe his story, because it really reflects what he is now.
He became a top student always in list in academic pupils.
I also shared him about myself, I said that I’m not like him. I never excelled in academic
during my elementary, I just pursue myself during my fourth year in high school, and it was
unexpected for me to be included in list of honor students. I also shared him that I am a
troublesome or somewhat a bad debtor, learning those attitude to whom person’s I’ve
encountered in my everyday living.
He looks hesitant every time I opened a conversation about my life, about whom really I
am and what kind of person I am.
One day, at boarding house of my classmate we’re doing a group project. He join with us
and at that time he believe to what I say to him, that I am not really a good person. He saw me
smoking time to time until he got oppressed to me he force me to stop doing it and either threw
out or keep it away from his sight. I disobey him at first until I been observed that he is getting
mad. There’s nothing I can do but to just hurl my cigarette away from them as also requested of
my groupmates. Every time I talked to him, he always go on distance away from me. It was
already afternoon, when I didn’t even know that he already gone home.
After that day, we’re almost all at school for a signing of clearance in our organization.
He still evading me until he go near to me to give me my clearance, I just told him to keep it and
I started to apologize for what I’ve done and explained to him why I does such unexpected action
he has seen yesterday. I told him that I’m really a bad debtor, and I can’t really evade to pull out
such temptation in my life. I also admitted that I’m not just a cigarette user but also a liquor
drinker. He just requested me upon my explanation, “You can do what you want, don’t just try to
show it off to me again or else I will leave you as your friend,” that’s a passage he say that I can
never forget.
I put it to my mind, but a month’s later he saw a pack of cigarette at my bag. I’m just
thankful that he didn’t mind me on it, I just give it to my classmate who is in proper
accountability to use it. I do it repeatedly, what he does is to always accept my sincere apology
and never interfere with my bad habits.
And now I am now a second year student, we’re still friend but I just don’t know why he
sits far from me. I just didn’t slacken him. Until he confront me that he has a plan in his life
which I’m not included. He has a goal wanted to reach beyond academic existence but that
moment he never talked to me again.
But one day, I guess he felt sympathy to me of seeing me always sole. He talk to me
sincerely, apologizing for what he did and accepting me again as his friend. I was happy at that
moment, I also apologize for him for everything I did wrong and thanking him also for going
back to my life.
We both keep a promise, “Let us be a bestfriend and a partner in all aspects of life,
Adding or accepting all the challenges that will come, Subtracting or evading to commit
mistakes, Multiplying or applying all of our learning in school and sharing those to whole and
Dividing or expressing our love and concern to our love ones into everyone. Let us be stable as
friend always and forever.”
- A promise quote made by my mhen, Jobert.
Educational Tour
The students of Bicol for Agriculture High School conducted an Educational Tour to
somewhat beautiful places in Legazpi City. And Richard would need five-hundred pesos so he
could join the tour.
Five hundred pesos is not really a big amount of money. He could ask his mother or his
father for it anytime. His mother is a Social Worker and his father is a construction worker.
The problem is would his mother allow him to join the tour?
His father is not a problem. He would allow him anytime, anywhere. And he would gladly give
him all the things he would need in the tour, money and food included.
Now, he has a problem with his mother. His mother has been nagging him to clean his
room and be obedient to everything that his mother or father has commanded. His mother didn’t
want him to gout with friends, which according to his mother, ha sbad influence to him.
“Just do what she wants” his classmate Kennith told him while eating snack outside the
school. “I think that’s the best you can do to please her mother so she would allow you to go
with us in upcoming tour.
“Okey, I’ll be obedient at them at all time”, Richard said.
After breakfast on Sunday Morning, Richard clean his room. He skip playing computer
games. He wanted his mother and father saw his willingness to an educational tour.
As he was folding out his bed sheet, blanket and arranging his pillow, two pieces of fifty-
peso bill and four pieces of one-hundred peso bill fell to his pillow.
“Ho, oh”, he exclaimed as he was counting it up repeatedly. It was the money he thought
that he needed for a tour. He was just surprise by his parents.
He was drumming the table in merriment. The door opened and his mother entered the
room.
“What the matter with you?” she asked.
“Look ma, I found this in my pillow, which I think it was from you and pa?”
“Yes, it was a surprise from ours, we are letting you to join in your educational tour.”, his
mother replied with a smile.
Yea, I can join the happy tour.”
“Oops, just promise me to behave and don’t escaped away from the group. Always listen
to your teacher instructions,” his mother last say and went out.
“I will, ma! I promise, and thank you again,” his follow-up replied.
He felt good with himself.
Then he continue cleaning—sweeping the floor, he also go to their backyard and swept
the ground of dried leaves, dust it and put in on the trash can.
In the afternoon, he go to the church with his parents and as the mass has ended they proceeded
to supermarket to buy what he gonna need in tour by tomorrow.
As they went home, he immediately prepared all the things he will need and right after
their dinner. He go to bed early and sleep.
The educational tour has come, and it seems that Richard was so excited and happy.
Almost all of his classmates join, and for those who didn’t has a punishment- they will make a
project individually which he think it was costly.
The bus has started to move, their first stop was the KAWA-KAWA, in which he got so
tired in walking to a high-alike mountain. He saw there several stations—figure of Jesus Christ
in His atonement at cross. He also seen there the beauty and bloom of Sunflower. They also take
their Lunch in this place, tiny rain drops, so that they hastily seek to a covered or Nipa-Hut that
can be shed.
It makes you lose when you tour around the destination.
They also visited LIGNON HILLS, where they can viewed airplanes. Next is the
CAGSAWA which they can saw the perfect cone-shaped of Mayon Volcano, and the church
Cagsawa that becomes a historic place, which only the upper part of the church has been saved
from landslide of Lava during the eruption of Mayon Volcano.
The last destination before they go home is the GAISANO MALL, where Richard bought
a present for his mother. And he also bought a remembrance to every place they gone by, a
necklace, a native wallet, a key chain, a T-shirt and a Rosary.
It almost eve, when he got home. He take asleep to his sit on the bus but it’s not enough
to make him more alive in surprising his mother. Before he ride going home, He first drink a
coffee in the 24-hours open bakery.
At home it seems that her mother was still awake waiting for him to come home.
“How’s the tour son?” his mother asked.
“It’s great ma!, I really enjoy touring around the place of our destinations. Legazpi city
was really one of a great place in Camarines Sur, I ever reached.”
“Oh! You better eat now but before –change your clothes first”, his mother said.
“Ok, ma!”
After worn-out his clothes and eat dinner. He seems that his mother was busy encoding
something at their desktop.
“Ta-da!”, Richard surprise his mother on the present he had brought –a kind of Diamond
Necklace.
“Son, why did you need to buy me such thing? It’s too expensive but thank you so much
for this souvenir I really appreciated it much.
His father got awakened, “What’s for me?”
“Oh, pa.. Next time I’ll buy a Diamond necklace for you too,” he teased and they all
laugh for that joke.
“You’re such insane, go now to bed because it’s near midnight!”
Richard go now to his room, and thanks’ God for the goodness of his parents and for
keeping him safe for the whole day in their Educational Tour. He knew that he can find pleasure
in everything if he stays to be Obedience and nice boy at sight of his parents.
