Writers love to use interesting sounds in their poems. These sound devices include: Rhyme Repetition Alliteration Onomatopoeia Sound SIZZLE
Rhymes are words that end with the same sound. Like Cat in the Hat . This is the most common sound device in Poetry. However, n ot all poetry has to rhyme . Rhyme
Repetition occurs when poets repeat words, phrases, or lines in a poem. It creates a pattern It increases rhythm It strengthens feelings, ideas and mood in a poem Repetition Let it go! Let it go!
Alliteration is the repetition of the first consonant sound in words as in the nursery rhyme: ‘‘ P eter P iper p icked a p eck of p ickled p eppers.’’ Alliteration

Figurative language or figures of speech are tools that writers use to create images, or ‘‘ paint pictures ’’ in your mind. Similes, metaphors , personification, hyperboles and symbolism are 5 figures of speech that create imagery. Figurative Language
A simile compares 2 things using the words ‘‘like’’ or ‘‘as’’. Comparing one thing to another creates a vivid image. Example: Jackneisha ran fast like a cheetah. Simile
A metaphor compares 2 things that are different by using the words: is, are, was, were. It gives the qualities of one thing to something that is quite different. Metaphor

A hyperbole is an outrageous exaggeration that emphasizes a point, and can be ridiculous or funny. Examples: You snore louder than a train engine. I’m so hungry I could eat a horse. Puerto Rico is the most beautiful place in the world. Hyperbole
Symbolism occurs when a word, which has meaning in itself, is used to represent something entirely different. Examples are: Using an image of the Puerto R ican flag to represent patriotism and a love for one’s country. Using an apple to represent education . Using a heart to represent love. Symbolism
