POLYMERS Prepared by: Glejdis Hajdini 11D

WHAT IS A POLYMER? POLYMER IS A LARGE MOLECULE OR MACROMOLECULE COMPOSED OF MANY REPEATED SUBUNITS.

PRODUCTION OF POLYMER Synthetic polymers are produced by chemical reactions, termed "polymerizations." Polymerizations occur in varied forms--far too many to examine here--but such reactions consist of the repetitive chemical bonding of individual molecules, or monomers. Assorted combinations of heat, pressure and catalysis alter the chemical bonds that hold monomers together, causing them to bond with one another. Most often, they do so in a linear fashion, creating chains of monomers called polymers.

WHAT IS PS? Polystyrene  ( PS )  is a synthetic  aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene. Polystyrene can be solid or foamed .

What is pet? Polyethylene terephthalate   , commonly known as   PET ,  PETE is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in fibers for clothing,  containers for liquids and foods, thermoforming for manufacturing, and in combination with glass fiber for engineering resins.

WHAT IS PVC? Polyvinyl chloride commonly abbreviated  PVC , is the third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethylene and  polypropylene . Polyvinyl chloride is produced by polymerization of the vinyl chloride  monomer .

WHAT IS PBS? Polybutylene succinate  ( PBS ) is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the  polyester family . PBS is a  biodegradable aliphatic polyester with properties that are comparable to polypropylene.

APPLICATION OF POLYMER 1.IN MEDICINE Many biomaterials, especially heart valve replacements and blood vessels, are made of polymers like Dacron, Teflon and polyurethane . IN HEART VALVE

2.IN SPORTS Playground equipment, various balls, golf clubs, swimming pools, and protective helmets are often produced from polymers.

3.IN SCIENCE Plastic containers of all shapes and sizes are light weight and economically less expensive than the more traditional containers. Clothing, floor coverings, garbage disposal bags, and packaging are other polymer applications.

4.IN INDUSTRY Automobile parts, windshields for fighter planes, Pipes, tanks, packing materials, insulation, wood substitutes, adhesives, matrix for composites, and elastomers are all polymer applications used in the industrial market.
