The objectives are: Definition of pollutants 3 T ypes of water pollutants Examples of water pollutants 10/7/2015

Definition of transpiration A   pollutant  is a substance or energy introduced into the environment that has undesired effects, or adversely affects the usefulness of a resource. A pollutant may cause long- or short-term damage by changing the growth rate of plant or animal species. 10/7/2015 4

Water pollution Water pollution  is the contamination of natural water bodies by chemical, physical, radioactive  or pathogenic microbial substances . 10/7/2015 5

Types of water pollutants There are two types of water pollution:point source and nonpoint source . Point source pollution : comes from a specific source, like a factory pipe. Point source pollution is easy to identify.  Nonpoint  source pollution: comes from many different sources, such as melting snow and rainwater running over the ground. 10/7/2015 7

Examples of water pollutants Examples of water pollutants from runoff include: Pesticides and fertilizers from our lawns and gardens Oil, grease, and chemicals from our cars and trucks Heavy metals and chemicals from construction sites and factories Our drinking water can be affected by chemicals and pollution from runoff. Swimming or playing in polluted water can also make us sick. 10/7/2015 8

There are many types of water pollution because water comes from many sources. Here are a few types of water pollution : 1. Nutrients Pollution 2. Surface water pollution 3. Oxygen Depleting 4. Ground water pollution 5. Microbiological 6. Suspended Matter 7. Chemical Water Pollution 8. Oil Spillage 10/7/2015 9 Types of water pollution

Many different chemicals are regarded as pollutants, ranging from simple inorganic ions to complex organic molecules. The water pollutants are all divided up into various classes. Every class of pollutants has its own specific ways of entering the environment and its own specific dangers. All classes have major pollutants in it that are known to many people, because of the various health effects. 10/7/2015 10 What are the properties and dangers of water pollutants?
