POLLUTION OF AIR
& WATER

Air
◦We know that we can survive for some time without food ,but we cannot survive even for
minutes without Air
◦This simple fact tell us how air is very important for us.
◦Air consists of mixture of gases. By volume, about 78% of the mixture of nitrogen, 21% Oxygen,
Carbon Dioxide, Argon, Methane, Ozone & Water Vapoure
Air Pollution
◦Addition of such substances to the atmosphere modifies it. When air is contaminated by
unwanted substances which have harmful effect on both the Living and the Non Living
organisms it is referred to as Air Pollution.

How Dose Air Get Polluted
◦The substance which contaminate the air are Pollutants.
◦Natural Sources : Smoke, Dust from Forest Fire or Volcanic eruption
◦Human Activities : Factories, Power Plants, Automobiles, Burning of Firewood & Dung Cakes.
Air Pollution
◦One or more Contaminant which pollutes the air or disturbs it .
◦SIX COMMON POLLUTANTS :
Carbon Monoxide Nitrogen Dioxide Particulate Sulfer Dioxide Lead Ground Level
(Co) (No2) Matter (So2) (pb) Ozone
(O3)

Water Pollution
◦Life without Water is impossible.
◦Water pollution effects living & non living objects
◦Water pollution can be defined as presence of solid, liquid & gaseous contaminants in such
concentrations that may alter the quantity of water.
◦Water pollution is defined as the addition of an excess material or heat that is harmful to the
living organism or which impairs the beneficial use of water.
Pure form of Water
◦Precipitation – Rain water that comes in different forms depending on the temperature of the
atmosphere. Eg: Rain, Sleet, Snow
Causes of Water Pollution
◦The principal sources of water pollution resulting from exploration & production .
Operations are :
1.Domestic waste
2.Sewage System
3.Solid waste
4.Industrial waste
5.Acid rain
6.Oil industry
7.Aquatic plants
8.Toxic water
9.Thermal heating
10.Nuclear waste
1.Domestic waste :
Dumping of household waste in water
2. Sewage waste
3. Solid Waste :
*Causes blockage in flow of water
*Pollution of air & Pollution of water
*Polythene is a main solid waste
4. Industrial waste :
*Containing paper waste, rubber, metallic, aluminial waste, etc
5.Acid rain
6.Oil Industry
7.Aquatic plants :
*Water hyacinth, an aquatic plant causes
pollution in water
* It is long leaved plant which grows faster in water
bodies and absorb all essential nutrients from water
which is fetal for marine organisms
*Terror of Bengal Abundance
8. Religious means
Water Pollution
◦Effects on Humans
*Diseases caused by :
*Drinking Contaminated water
*Swimming in polluted water
*Contact with chemically polluted water
◦Effects on Animals :
*200 Turtles in Australia’s surround water die each year
* Birds & Mammals become coated with oil
◦Things To Do :
*Turn off running water
*Be cautions what you pour in your sink / flush down you toilet. DO NOT
FLUSH CIGARETTES.
