Chemical pollution: The most common type of water pollution, chemicals can infiltrate both underground water sources and those sitting on the Earth’s surface. Groundwater pollution: As mentioned above, agriculture is a key source of water pollution, especially for groundwater. Fertilisers and pesticides applied to crops can seep into the ground and contaminate underwater rivers and waterbeds, thus compromising the quality of wells, boreholes and other places from which groundwater is extracted for human use Surface pollution: Referring to all water sources above ground, such as rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, surface water pollution can occur both naturally, accidentally and intentionally. Thermal pollution: Thermal pollution occurs when hot or cold water is dumped into a natural body of water, changing its temperature. Microbiological pollution: Unlike most others on this list, microbiological pollution is a naturally occurring form of water contamination. Microorganisms such bacteria, protozoa and viruses can infiltrate water supplies, causing diseases such as bilharzia and cholera . 11/17/2023 Add a footer 3

Ways to prevent water pollution Pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can. Blow or sweep fertilizer back onto the grass if it gets onto paved areas. Don't put fertilizer on the grass right before it rains. The chemicals will wash into storm drains and waterways. Mulch or compost grass or yard waste . Or, leave it in your yard if you can't compost. Don't blow leaves into the street. This clogs and damages storm drains. Wash your car or outdoor equipment where it can flow to a gravel or grassy area instead of a street. Don't pour your motor oil down the storm drain. Take it to the nearest auto parts store. It's free! Never clean up a spill by hosing it into a storm drain. Place kitty litter, sand, or another absorbent on the spill. Once the liquid becomes solid - sweep it up and throw it in a garbage can. 11/17/2023 Add a footer 6
