` POLYMELIA DISEASE GENETIC DISEASE

` POLYMELIA DISEASE Polymelia is a type of birth defect which occurs inside the mothers womb. It is involved in forming and developing extra parts of the body that usually impact on deformed and shrunken limbs.

` Polymelia does not only happen in/on humans, but also in most species of land-dwelling animals. Most of the time it is a result in conjoined twins and small, extra parts between the normal limbs, are caused by the body axis forking in the dipygus condition. POLYMELIA DISEASE

` CAUSES Polymelia is caused by an embryo which starts as forming conjoined twins. Conjoined twins are twins that are physically joined at birth, sometimes sharing the same organs and parts of the able body. This is usually a result in one twin ending up being attached to the other twins body.

` The presence of limbs attached to various body regions and could be classified as: Cephalomelia (extra-limb attached to the head) Notomelia (extra-limb attached to the back bone) Throacomelia (extra-limb attached to the thorax) Pyromelia (extra-limb attached to the pelvis bone ) SYMPTOMS

` TREATMENT The extra limb can be surgically removed/amputated but the method that is used today has many after effects and can lead up to disabilities and other things. There has only ever been one successful surgery that left the patient unaffected.

` SCREENING & PROBABILITY Screening , is a strategy used in a population to identify an unrecognized disease in individuals without signs or symptoms. Although, screening is not needed in this case because Polymelia can be diagnosed through vision perception.

` STATISTIC Polymelia has never occurred in any New Zealand children but certainly in animals . Polymelia is passed on through genetics, although it is an extremely rare condition to inherit .
