Poor dental hygiene is one of the health issues that is often times overlooked by many Filipinos especially in the rural areas of the Philippines. This
problem has led to prevalent cases of oral disease in children and adults in the community.
Having a good dental habit is extremely important in the first few years of a child’s life as it builds a good foundation of oral health in the later
years of their life.
As the classroom can be considered as the second home children, the role of teachers, not only educators but also as their second parents is imperative
in building a good dental hygiene of their students. With the help of Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Program, Department of Health and the
Department of Education, Nailon Elementary School received tools such as classroom kits, toothpaste and toothbrushes, children’s activities and materials
for teachers to help them provide a proper guidance in helping the kids achieve healthier teeth and brighter smiles.
Under this program, one of the activities that was taught to the children was brushing after eating their snacks during recess period using the
toothpaste and toothbrushes provided by Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Program. Activities such as this will help the students build a good
dental habit growing up.
Global Handwashing Day is a way to support a global and local culture of handwashing with soap, shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing in each country
and raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap. Since 2008, Global Handwashing Day has been celebrated annually worldwide.
Global Handwashing Day encourages school children, teachers and families to get involved to promote handwashing with soap, the Department of Education
implemented the 2020 Global Handwashing Day with the theme: “Hand Hygiene for All”.
WINS Coordinator together with the Principal conducted a short orientation to inform the students the importance of hand washing and demonstrated/showed
video the eight steps of proper handwashing. To highlight the Global Handwashing Day celebration, all the teachers on duty, students and parents participated in the
Handwashing.
Nailon Elementary School successfully implemented the Global Handwashing Day.
In order to intensify health and nutrition among our grade school pupils, Nailon Elementary School as spearheaded with School Feeding Coordinator Mrs. Julieta
F. Pabiran and our School Head Mam Sarah P. Mejares in running targeted supplementary feeding program for wasted and severely wasted children of this school. This
program aims to reduce malnutrition among grade school pupils.
Gulayan sa paaralan served as partner of the SBFP. It served as a supplier of vegetables such as malunggay, kamatis, okra, and other green leafy plants
which are very essential for the nutritious meals served.
During the feeding, health care practices such as handwashing and tooth brushing were also promoted. Teachers in all grade levels make sure that the pupil’s
nail and hair were clean and proper. This is to ensure health and hygiene of the pupils.
To ensure the maintenance of good oral health among learners, the Department of Education (DepEd) released DepEd Order No. 041 or the
Guidelines on the Implementation of School Dental Health Care Program.
The program aims to provide access to health services among learners who need preventive and curative services, including immediate dental and
medical emergency care in schools by establishing fully functional clinics.
The mouth is said to be the gateway to your overall health. That is why it is important to maintain good oral health among learners.
Oral health is essential to good health and general well-being. It has important implications not only for physical health but also for one’s social
life, emotional health, and the viability of one’s career and personal goals. Good oral hygiene – specifically taking proper care of the mouth, teeth, and
gums – can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. It may help as well in preventing serious non-communicable diseases such
as cardiovascular problems and diabetes.
