DAY 3 - Divine Liturgy - with beatification of the seven martyred Greek Catholic bishops at the Blaj Freedom Field

Calvary of the Greek Catholic Church - In 1945, one and a half million Eastern rite Catholics lived in Romania, a living and thriving church, which returned to unity with Rome in 1698. At the end of the Second World War, Romania fell under the influence of the Soviet Union : The Romanian Communist Party, the Marxist-Leninist party of Romania, came to power on December 30, 1947. This triggers the ordeal of the Greek-Catholic Church, which was declared “illegal ” and all its properties were confiscated. The communist authorities, with the connivance of the Orthodox hierarchy , decided to suppress this Church following orders from Moscow. The intention , in all countries in the communist orbit , was to separate Catholics from the Pope .

Not a single bishop gives in - Despite the pressures suffered by the Greek-Catholic clergy and parishioners to assimilate into the official state church, not a single bishop relents and thus the seven bishops suffer imprisonment under a regime of extermination and torture . In this period, the Greek-Catholic Church continued to function underground and in diaspora. Communism in Romania lasted until the overthrow of dictator Nicolas Ceausescu in 1989. First, a campaign was launched for the Greek-Catholic clergy to integrate into the Orthodox Church: out of 1,600 priests, only 38 yielded . Despite this, the Greek-Catholic Church was declared dissolved and its buildings and property were confiscated. Then came physical persecution: hundreds of Greek Catholic priests were detained and pressured , although almost none of them relented.

Valeriu Traian Frentiu He was Bishop of Oradea first, and then Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia and Fagaras . The communist regime arrested him on October 28, 1948 . He was detained in the Dragoslavele concentration camp, then inthe Caldarusani Monastery - converted into a detention center - and, since 1950, in the Sighetul Marmatiei penitentiary centre.

Ioan Suciu - Bishop Ioan Suciu, of Alba-Julia, spoke these words in his cathedral before being arrested: “We will submit to the laws but we will not do anything against our faith. And if they ask us: "Which side are you on, on the side of the people or on the side of the Pope?", we will answer : “ On the side of God, to help this people." He was arrested on October 28, 1948 and he died from repeated physical torture after 5 years of ordeal.

Alexandru Rusu - On August 13, 1956, under the pretext of being received in audience by the minister of religious affairs, Petre Constantinescu-Iasi, he was separated from the other two bishops and transferred to the Cocoțu monastery of Niculițel. In 1957 , the Cluj military court sentenced him to 25 years of hard labor for instigation and high treason. He was imprisoned in Gherla, in the basement, where he behaved with great dignity.In the spring of 1963 he was struck by kidney disease. On May 9, after blessing those present and his cellmates, he said : “ My brothers, now I go to God to receive my reward for the life received from Him, from the Church and from the Romanians .” He was buried without any religious ceremony in the Gherla political prisoners' cemetery ,.

Vasile Aftenie - Bishop of Ulpiana. He was arrested on October 28, 1948 by the communist authorities and transferred first to Dragoslavele and then to the concentration camp built at the Caldarusani Monastery, where he was tortured and mutilated. Finally, he was imprisoned in Vacaresti prison , he died on May 10, 1950.

Tit Liviu Chinezu - The prelate was arrested on October 28, 1948 along with other priests and bishops and transferred to the Neamt monastery. He was then transferred to Caldarusani prison where, on December 3, 1949, he received episcopal ordination from other imprisoned bishops. When news of the ordination reached the communist authorities, the new bishop was transferred to the Sighetul Marmatiei penitentiary center. There he suffered a serious illness due to forced labor, hunger and cold. He died on Jan 15, 1955 and was buried in a mass grave.

Ioan Balan - He was consecrated bishop of Lugoj in 1936 and was later appointed metropolitan. He was arrested on October 28, 1948 and held in Dragoslavele and then in the Caldarusani monastery. In May 1950 he was transferred to the Sighetul Marmatiei penitentiary center. In 1956 he was transferred to the Ciorogarla monastery where he became seriously ill. He died on August 4, 1959.

Iuliu Hossu - He was bishop of the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Gerla, in Transylvania. On October 28, 1948 he was arrested by the communist government and deported to Dragoslavele , then transferred to the Caldarusani monastery and later to the Sighetul Marmatiei prison. After passing through other detention centers, he was transferred again to the Caldarusani monastery. Imprisoned until his death on May 28, 1970.

Some testimonials These seven Greek Catholic bishops are just a few of the Christians of Romania, bishops, priests and laymen, who deserve the crown of martyrdom . One among many is Ioan Ploscaru , bishop, who died in 1998 at the age of 87, of which he spent fifteen years in prison in inhumane conditions ;

Alexandru Todea secretly consecrated bishop in 1950 and imprisoned from 1951 to 1964. After spending 13 years in prison , upon his release he reorganized the Greek Catholic Church underground and when communism fell he was named archbishop and then cardinal by John Paul II.
