Population distribution in India shows wide variation. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India with a population of more than 166 million. Nineteen states of India have a population of over 10 million. On the other hand there are 8 states and union territories in the country that have a population of less than 1 million. STATE WISE DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION Unevenness of distribution is an important feature of India's population. Uttar Pradesh alone houses 16.17 per cent of the country's population. Similarly five states consisting of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh with only 30 per cent of the country's total area support about 50 per cent of its population.
