For centuries of human existence on this planet, our population has remained in proportion to the natural resources available , But there has been a rapid increase in human population in the past century. Population explosion is defined as a huge growth in human population over a short period of time leading to shortage of available resources on the earth. Population explosion today is one of the most serious problems the world is facing INTRODUCTION
Population Explosion refers the sudden and rapid rise in the size of population. It is an unchecked growth of human population caused as a result of: - Increased birth rate . - Decreased infant mortality rate. - Improved life expectancy. DEFINITION
The current population of India is 1,343,961,178 as of Sunday, August 6, 2017. The population density in India is 452 per Km2 (1,169 people per mi2). 32.8 % of the population is urban (439,801,466 people in 2017). India's per capita income (nominal) was $1,570 in 2013 . The world population was estimated to have reached 7.5 billion in April 2017. POPULATION OF INDIA AND WORLD
There are two theories of population explosion. 1. Malthusian Theory of Population. 2. Demographic Transition Model. THEROIES OF POPULATION
Population increases faster than food production . Whereas population increases in geometric progression 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and so forth. food production increases in arithmetic progressionlike1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and so on. Malthusian Theory of Population
It suggests that the population growth rates for all countries can be divided into 5 stages . Stage 1: Birth Rate - Very High. Death Rate - Very High. Natural Increase - Population Steady. Example is A Few remote groups. Stage 2: Birth Rate - Very High. Death Rate - Falling Rapidly. Natural Increase - Very Rapid Increase. Example is India . Stage 3: Birth Rate: Falling rapidly. Death Rate: Falling more slowly . Natural Increase: Rapid increase. Example is Brazil. Stage 4: Birth Rate: Falling more slowly. Death rate: Slight fall. Natural Increase: Very slow increase. Example is USA, Japan, France and UK. Stage 5: Birth Rate: Falling more slowly. Death rate: Slight fall . Natural Increase: Very slow increase. Example is Germany( future). Demographic Transition Model
High Birth Rate. Low Death Rate. Early Marriage and Universal Marriage System. Polygamy. Preference for a Male Child. Widow Marriage. Illiteracy. Poverty. Lack of birth control devices. CAUSES OF POPULATION EXPLOTION
10. Control of Famine’s and Epidemics. 11. Availability of Medical Facilities. 12. Illegal migration. 13. Religious Superstitions. 14. Hot Climate . 15. Maternal and child health care services. 16. Other causes include: Lack of means of entertainment, Ambition of big family, Joint family system, etc.
Problem of Investment Needed. Problem of Capital Formation. Effect on per Capita Income. Effect on Food Problem. Problem of Unemployment. Low Standard of Living. EFFECTS OF POPULATION EXPLOSION
Poverty. Population and Social Problems. Impact on Maternity Welfare. Unemployment. Manpower utilization. Pressure on infrastructure. Resource utilization.
Interventions under family planning program : Scheme for Home delivery of contraceptives by ASHAs at doorstep of beneficiaries. Scheme for ASHAs to ensure spacing in births: The scheme is operational from 16th May, 2012. Pregnancy testing kits have been made an integral part of ASHA kit and are being used to diagnose pregnancy early. A new family planning method, i.e. post-partum IUCD (PPIUCD) has been introduced in the program. POPULATION CONTROL STRATEGIES
5.Basket of choice has been expanded with introduction of a new IUCD-375 of 5 years effectivity . 6.Dedicated counselors (RMNCH counsellors) are placed at high case load facilities for providing family planning counseling to clients . 7. Celebration of World Population Day 11th July & Fortnight.
8. Other Interventions: National Family Planning Indemnity Scheme’ ( NFPIS) . MOHFW provides compensation for loss of wages to the beneficiary and also to the service provider (& team) for conducting sterilisations. More emphasis on Spacing methods like IUCD . Contraceptives supply management up to peripheral facilities. Demand generation activities in the form of display of posters, billboards and other audio and video materials in the various facilities.
Prerna Strategy:- JSK has launched this strategy for helping to push up the age of marriage of girls and delay in first child and spacing in second child the birth of children in the interest of health of young mothers and infants. Santushti Strategy: Under this strategy, Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh, invites private sector gynaecologists and vasectomy surgeons to conduct sterilization operations in Public Private Partnership mode. OTHER STRATEGY
FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMME
To promote the adoption of small family size norm, on the basis of voluntary acceptance. To promote the use of spacing methods. To ensure adequate supply of contraceptive to all eligible couples within easy reach. Emphasis on spacing methods along with terminal methods. AIMS OF FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMME
