Common post-application paint defects
On the following slide there is a list of post application defects. In
groups, find the causes and remedies of each defect.
Points are scored for each correct cause and remedy – bonus points
are available.

•Runs, sags and curtains
•Blistering
•Orange peel
•Misses
•Wrinkling
•Brush marks
•Grinning
•Skid marks
•Paint on adjacent surfaces

Common post-application defects (answers)
•Cissing: Grease/polish. Sand down and repaint.
•Runs, sags and curtains: Paint too thin or think. Sand down and
repaint.
•Blistering: Painting in direct sunlight. Remove with heat gun.
•Orange peel: Caused by heavy rollering. Lay off after application.
•Misses: Areas missed. Repaint when dry.
•Wrinkling: Previous coating not fully dry. Sand down and repaint.
•Brush marks: Poor application. Sand down and repaint.
•Grinning: Poor coverage. Recoat when dry.
•Skid marks: Heavy rollering. Lay off after application.
•Paint on adjacent surfaces: Poor workmanship. Take care when
applying paint.
