Post-production diary B2 – Sunderland Documentary

Editing (initial edit) Before I made my final edit, where I added in all the graphics and such, I made an initial edit which consisted of just the raw footage straight from the camera. As it was such a large file (approximately 1hr 45mins) I needed to remove any parts where I stuttered or messed up a line before I could even think of adding graphics to the edit. I started by lowering the resolution of the video so it was easier to work with and wouldn’t over-stress my PC, I then imported the files into premier pro and trimming out any unnecessary parts or stuttered/incomplete speech. To keep track of which part of the script I was editing, I used the markers along the timeline and labelled them by giving them sub-headings, I also used an alternating colour scheme of red and white to make them look more separated from each other. When editing, I encountered no problems other than physical exhaustion once again. When I finished the initial edit, I rendered and exported it and created a new project in premiere pro, this would be my final edit of my documentary.

second edit and the graphics The second edit took about a week of on and off editing to complete, I started by importing the initial edit into premier pro. I inserted my new and improved intro into the video by using the same method of creating it in a different project and exporting it into the final edit. For most of the graphics I used a third-party extension called ‘Mister Horse’ which gave me access to a collection of ready-made and easy to use graphics that I could use for my video transitions, It also gave me a selection of sound effects to use, which I added into my video in great numbers. For a few of the inserted clips (the Gus Poyet interview for example) I used some of the other ‘Mister Horse’ transitions, such as the ‘fade to black’ ‘light leak’ and ‘zoom in/out’ I found that these did a good job at masking the cut between my video and the inserted clip, it also seemed to add a level of production quality.

Second edit and graphics (page 2) The first graphic was a transition screen wipe from the bottom left corner to the top right, initially the graphic was orange and red, but I changed it to red and white to match the Sunderland theme. The second type of graphic was the title graphics that I used between the seasons, I made this graphic myself by taking a video from YouTube by screen recording it, then I blurred it using the premiere pro ‘blur and sharpen’ tool which made the text on screen stand out. The fort I used for the text was bold and all caps, a font which I deemed to be fitting of the theme; I used white text with a thin black stroke and made it medium size text. For the pop-up graphics that I used in the middle of the long monologues, I used the ‘Mister Horse’ SFX to punctuate their appearance on screen, I think this had a great effect and made it seem less jarring than if it were to just pop up unnaturally. I sourced all the photos that I used from google, I saved them into a file and imported them directly into premiere pro and I never experienced an issue using this method. I used the same method for the graphics that fade in and out of the video, except I used the default premiere pro transition rather than the sound effect as I wanted to introduce them more gradually inro the frame rather than popping in and out.

Exporting and uploading issues ( copywright ) When I was finished with my edit, I once again rendered and exported my work and attempted to upload it to YouTube. I encountered no problems in the rendering and exporting stage as I was able to get both done without issue (despite it taking over an hour) however, when I uploaded my video to YouTube, I found that it had been copywrite stricken by the EFL and Sky sports YouTube accounts alongside others undoubtedly. Besides changing my whole documentary, I haven't yet found a solution to this problem, I tried adding a watermark in bottom right of the video, but this didn’t work so I am planning on uploading it to a different platform which I have yet to decide on.

Experimentation during editing During the editing process I used a software extension called Mister Horse which gave me access to different transitions and sound effects for premiere pro, this made it easier for me to experiment with my video and change different parts of it to make it more like what I envisioned. My first experimentation was with the colour of the transitions, at first, I used an orange and red colour scheme for the transition between video segments but eventually, I changed it to red and white to fit the SAFC theme as the club play in red and white so I thought that this colour scheme would suit it better. Another part that I experimented with was the audio effects, whenever images pop up on screen, they are punctuated with a sound effect from Mister Horse but during the editing process I changed which sound effects I used. The different sound effects where sounds such as a wine glass clinking, which sounded like a ding when the images popped up, a clicking sound and tapping sound. I tested all these sounds before I eventually landed on the ones that made it into my documentary. The final bit of experimentation I did during the editing process was the music that I used during the transitions between video segments. My choice of music throughout the whole video was intentional and I made sure every song related to the club in some way however, I did have difficulty choosing which songs I wanted to use, for example during the intro I used the song ‘Dance of the Knights’ as it is the song that plays before the players walk out of the tunnel at the Stadium of light but originally, I was going to use the Z-cars theme song as this was a song played at Roker Park when the players where coming out and is still I commonly used song throughout English football, I thought that this song would fit well as the intro is a montage of Sunderland while they were playing at Roker park but I eventually decided on using ‘Dance of the Knights’ as the documentary is about Sunderland in the 21 st century and that is the song used today
