Introduction Poultry farming is the practice of raising domestic birds such as hen, duck and turkey for eggs and meat. Poultry was raised for meat, eggs, and even religious rituals in Southeast Asia from ancient times. Large-scale commercial poultry farming grew, especially after World War II. Today it is one of the fastest-growing sectors in agriculture worldwide. It provides food, employment, and income to millions of people.

Benefits of poultry farming Nutritional Value: Eggs are a good source of proteins, vitamins, iron and fasts whereas meat is a good source of protein. Employment: It creates jobs in both rural and urban areas. Low Investment and Quick Returns: Poultry birds grow faster than other livestock. Byproducts: Bird droppings provide nitrogen to the soil, and are used as organic manure to enhance the fertility of soil. Economic Contribution: It contributes significantly to the GDP of our country.

How poultry farming is done Housing: Well ventilated sheds with proper temperature. Feeding: Moistened grains for easy swallowing with protein supplements and grit for physical digestion. Breeding: ,Selective breeding for high egg and meat yield. Management: Clean water, proper lighting, disease control, and record keeping.

Types of poultry farming Layers: These are egg laying birds. They start laying at about 18-20 weeks. Can lay 250-300 eggs per year. Broilers: These are birds raised for meat. They have fast growth and are ready for market within 6-8 weeks. They require high-energy diet for rapid weight gain.

Common poultry diseases Viral Diseases: Ranikhet – Causes loss of appetite and Paralysis. Bird Flu – Sudden death, swelling of head, comb and wattles. Bacterial Diseases: Fowl Cholera – Fever, bluish discoloration of comb and wattles. Parasitic Diseases: Worm infestations – Weight loss, diarrhea and pale comb.

Prevention and control Maintain clean housing. Vaccinate against major viral housing. Provide clean water and balanced feed. Isolate sick birds immediately. Do regular deworming and medication under veterinary guidance.
