INTRODUCTION Essay questions are supply or constructed response type questions and can be the best way to measure the students' higher order thinking skills, such as applying, organizing, synthesizing, integrating, evaluating, or projecting while at the same time providing a measure of writing skills.
DEFINITION Essay tests is a test containing questions requiring the students to respond in writing.Essay test emphasize recall rather than recognization of the correct alternative.Essay test requires relatively loss of responses or extended response. (Gilbert Sax1989) An essay test presents one or more questions or other tasks that require extended written response from the person being tested.
SCORING OF ESSAY TEST Prepare a marking scheme, suggesting the best possible answer and the marks given to the various points of the model answers. Decide in advance which factors will be considered in evaluating an essay response.
Evaluator should
Contd … Check the provided marking scheme, against actual responses and the consistently throughout assessment apply uniform norms for all papers. Grade only one question at time to minimize halo effect and to familiar with set of scoring criteria. Grade the respone unanimouslyto remove bias and halo effect.
CONTD .. The mechanism or technique of expression, spelling, punctuation, grammer should be judged separately from what the student’s writes. Try to score all response to particular question without interruption to increase reliability. The paper setter or subject experts should assess the answer book is preferrable .
METHODS OF SCORING ANALYTICAL METHOD In this ideal answer to question is specified in advance. The students sure is based upon the number of points contained in the answer. In addition component parts such as “effectiveness of expulsion”, logical organization and support statements are specifies and are assigned points or values In essence it is checklist that can be used objectively.
Example I. Indentation (1 point) A. Paragraph is indented II. Topic sentence (1 point each - 2 points total) A. Topic sentence is included B. Topic sentence is appropriately placed III. ADVANTAGES It can yield very reliable scores The subdivision of the model answer can make it easier to discuss the students the marks awarded to them.
LIMITATIONS It is very laborious and time consuming In attempt to identify elements, undue attention is given to superficial aspects.
GLOBAL METHOD Holistic or rating method. Ideal answer is not divided to specific points and component points The examiner is interacted to read the responses rapidly from a general impression and using some standard assign a rating to the response-use-good-average-poor for final discrimination use-superior quality, above average quality, average quality, below average quality and inferior quality.
STEPS OF HOLISTIC SCORING The first step in holistic scoring is to estimate the number of categories to which papers will be assigned. The characteristics of an answer in each category should be described. 2. Next, the scorer reads a few (5) papers to sample the quality of the responses (and perhaps make adjustments in the scoring system). 3. All papers are then read and sorted into stacks representing the categories used in grading. (Excellent, good, fair, poor; A, B, C, D, F; etc.) 4. The papers in each stack are read, moving papers to other stacks if necessary. 5. Finally, the scores are assigned to the papers.
ADVANTAGES It is very effective when large number of essays are to be read .

The student's position is clearly stated and well supported without the inclusion of unrelated material. Well organized, containing all required components. The student's position is clear and supported although extraneous, unrelated material weaken the student's position. Not all components are present. The student's position is unclear. Statements appear to be in random order
SEQUENTIAL SCORING In order to bring more objective the answers can be scored beautiully . That is same teacher valuing the answer of same question.
ADVANTAGES
SUGGESTIONS FOR GRADING ESSAY QUESTION Check your scoring key against actual aspect. Be consistent in your grading. Create only one question at a time for all papers. Create the responses anonymously. The mechanism of expression should be judged separately from what the students writes. If possible try to have two independent readings if test and use the average. Provide comments and correct errors. Set realistic standards.
RECAPTULIZATION Define essay test. True/false Ideal answer is divided into points in rating method. False Reliability will be higher in sequential scoring.
