Unit 1 Friends Forever The Simple Past Tense in Imaginative Texts Read the text and see the verbs used in the text. A long time ago, there lived a mighty tiger and a proud lion in a dense jungle. Both the animals were the rulers of the jungle and had immense power and strength. They were feared and respected by all animals of the jungle. One day, while wandering in the jungle, the tiger came across the lion. The tiger was in a playful mood and challenged the lion for a friendly boxing match. The lion, being proud and arrogant, readily accepted the challenge. Questions: What is the text about? What tense is used in the text?

Uses 1. To state finished actions, states or habits at certain time in the past (yesterday, last week, at 2 o’clock, this morning, etc.) Examples: - Lily flew to visit her friend Rere last week. - Mr. Robby left the house very early this morning. 2 To state finished actions, states or habits in the past that the time period has finished. This includes when the person we are talking about is dead. Examples: - The Vikings invaded Britain. - The boy’s mother passed away which made him in a grief. 3. To state finished actions, states or habits in the past that we have introduced with the present perfect or another tense. This is sometimes called ‘details of news’. Examples: - I’ve ever participated in a school drama. I did it on my elementary school’s g raduation. - Rose has watered her rose plant. She watered it early in the morning. 4. To relate stories or lists of events that happened in the past For example: Lily felt a bit worried. She didn’t see Rere for a quite while. She asked other animals in the forest, but no one saw her. Then, Lily saw Rere sitting alone on a big stone in a riverbank. Study the following information.

Types of Past Verbs There are two types of verbs in the past: 1. regural forms (ended with -d/-ed), such as created, disturbed, ended; and 2. irregular forms, such as heard, written, took. Structure/Pattern 1. With to be: was or were In the simple past tense, we use was for subjects he, she, it, I, and singular subject and were for subjects we, they, you, and plural subjects. We add ‘not’ after ‘was’ or ‘were’ in negative sentences and put ‘was’ or ‘were’ at the beginning of interrogative sentences. 2. With verbs Regular verbs end with -d/-ed, such as studied and played. We need an auxiliary ‘did’ when we say in negative (did not/didn’t) and interrogative sentences. So, we use verbs in base forms. Irregular verbs, such as won, flew, and made, follow the same rules in negative and interrogative sentences.

Questions: What animals do you see in the picture? Where do they live? Between the two wild animals, which do you think more powerful and stronger? Why? In your opinion, which deserves the king of the jungle? Why? Do you think the two animals can get along well? Why ? Look at the picture. Give your ideas by answering the questions.

Mention the characteristics which are identical with a lion and a tiger. Please do Activities on page 69 .

Predict the sequence of the story you have heard in Activity 1. Number the pictures based on your prediction.

Unit 2 Kindness and Loyalty Showing Feelings of Characters in a Story Study the following information. A story contains relationships among characters. One way to show the relationships is by using words for feelings, such as ‘cheerful’, ‘awful’, ‘pleased’, ‘angry’, ‘worried’, and ‘sorry’. These words are called adjectives. They express the characters’ feelings in stories. Using such adjectives can help your readers understand more about the characters’ feelings in the story. Several adjectives may clearly show positive or negative feelings, while others depend on the rest of the sentences to make the meanings clear. Here are those adjectives.

Try to identify the girl’s feelings based on her facial expressions. Use the available adjectives. Please do Activities on pages 7 7– 79 .

Practice the dialog. Anna : I also feel the same, Sir. Their hard work was totally in vain. Mr. Rudy : Don’t blame the nature. Disaster can happen unpredictably, so we must make preparation before it occurs. Next, what about you Sarah? Sarah : Personally, I feel angry with the queen. How could she ask her colony to work hard day and night, even triple harder after the storm occurred? While her colony was working, what did she do? She might only watch them over and gave instructions to them. Mr. Rudy : I can understand your concern. But that’s how nature works.

Look at the picture and guess the story depicted by the picture. In pairs, talk about your feeling after reading the story, like the above dialog.

Direct Speech in a Story Read the sentences. Why are the sentences written in quotation marks? 1. The travelers asked Rose, “Can we take some of the roses with us on our journey?” 2. Her grandmother said, “Always share your love and kindness with others, for they will come back to you in ways you’ve never imagined.” 3. A poor farmer came to the merchant to ask for a few apples. “No way! If you want some, then give me the money,” replied the merchant. See the sentences in quotation marks. They are called direct speech. Direct speech is a report of the exact words by a speaker. The exact words that have been said by a person are written down inside the quotation marks (“.…”). Unit 3 Sharing and Caring Narrative Text Study the information. Continue to the next slide. An imaginative story has a certain text type called a narrative text. A narrative text aims to amuse or entertain listeners or readers. It uses the simple past tense, direct speech, and adjectives to describe characters’ traits and behaviors. A narrative text consists of at least three elements; orientation, complication, and resolution. See the following example.

Look at the pictures. Say what you know by answering the questions. Questions: 1. What animals are they? 2. Which animal is the biggest? 3. Which animal is the smallest? 4. Where do you think each animal lives? 5. How are the animals’ feelings as seen in the pictures?

Read the text in turns in proper pronunciation. Once upon a time, in a dense bamboo forest lived a group of pandas. Among them was a young panda named Pio, who was always curious and adventurous. One day, while playing in the forest, Pio came across a beautiful peach tree. The tree was laden with ripe, juicy peaches, and Pio couldn’t resist his temptation to taste one. He plucked a peach from the tree and took a big bite. The peach was so delicious that he could not stop eating them. As Pio was eating the peaches, he noticed that there was only one peach left on the tree. He immediately climbed up the tree to get it, but he slipped and fell to the ground. The impact of the fall made him realize that he had been greedy and careless. Pio’s mother, who had been watching him from a distance, came running to him. She hugged him and said, “My dear Pio, I am glad that you are okay. But you must learn from your mistake. Being greedy can lead to danger, and you must always be careful.” Pio listened to his mother’s words and realized the wisdom in her advice. From that day on, he became more mindful and cautious in his actions. He also started sharing his food with the other pandas in the forest and learned the importance of sharing and caring for others.
