Important transmission pathways to mitigate with PPE include : Person to person contact Droplet spread Airborne transmission Contaminated objects (fomites ) The use of (IPC ) principles keep patients and health workers safe wih measures like: hand hygiene, PPE use and waste management materials.
Examples of PPEs Gloves Gowns S hoe covers H ead covers Masks E ye protection F ace shields etc
WHO Hand Hygiene There are 3 methods of hand decontamination: social, antiseptic hand decontamination and surgical scrub technique . This depends on the circumstances and level of decontamination required. GLOVING AND UNGLOVING Gloving involves putting on a pair of clean or sterile gloves to protect one from pathogenic micro organisms and avoid contamination of sterile fields in sterile situations. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF GLOVES USE. Wear gloves prior to contact with patient, surrounding and before any procedure A separate pair of glove for each patient. Wearing gloves does not replace the need for handwashing.
PUTTING ON STERILE GLOVES a) Closed Technique Lay the glove palm over the cuff of the gown. The fingers of the glove face towards you. Grab the cuff of the glove and bring it over the cuff of the sleeve. Unroll the glove cuff so that it covers the sleeve cuff. Do the same on the opposite hand N/ B:Never allow the bare hands to touch the gown cuff or the glove.
Open Technique 1. Pick the glove by its inside with one hand. Do not touch the outside. 2. Slide the glove and put it on to the opposite hand 3. Using the gloved hand, slide the fingers into the outer side of the opposite glove. 4. Slide now the ungloved hand into the glove as the other hand unrolls the cuff. Do not touch the bare arm as the cuff is unrolled. Read on the Ungloving Process
IN- THEATRE PROTOCOL The process of scrubbing, gowning, and gloving is one that all members of the surgical team must complete before each operation . Scrubbing reduces the risk of infection and significantly improves patient outcomes . This is done after removal of watches and rings from your hands and ensuring that your sleeves are at least two to three inches above your elbows.
Gowning and Gloving Take the sterile gown and gently shake it out, taking care not to let anything else touch it. Open it up and place your hands into the sleeves. Keep your hands inside the sleeves Ask an assistant to help pull it up over your shoulders and fasten it up at the back Take the right hand glove and place it, palm down, fingers facing your body Grasp the bottom of the cuff with the thumb and index finger of your right hand, still inside the sleeve, grasp the top of the cuff with your left hand and pull the glove around and over your right hand.
Cont’d Pull gently on the sleeve of the gown to help move your hands into the gloves and straighten out the fingers. The sleeves of the gown should remain over most of your palm Repeat this technique for the left hand To Complete It is advised to rest your hands on your front as you move around to ensure you remain sterile Make sure you do not touch any non-sterile equipment as you move to the operating area
