Identifying New Challenges Faced by Human Populations in Contemporary Societies

What are the challenges you think, that people may be facing today? What is human population? What is contemporary society?

Human Population - refers to the number of individuals in a particular area. The term human population simply would be the number of people thriving in a specific area which could range from a village to the world usually.   Contemporary Society - is defined as  a setting characterized by technological . Innovation and increasing human interconnection and globalization. It brings about. changes such as increased life expectancy, literacy and gender equality , bringing a natural.

NEW CHALLENGES OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Emerging Technologies   - is a term generally used to describe a new technology, but it may also refer to the continuing development of an existing technology.   This  can lead to job loss and economic instability for those who are displaced. Cyberbullying : Social media and messaging apps have made it easier than ever for people to harass and bully others online .

Overpopulation   - is the state whereby the human population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying capacity of the ecological setting.   More people mean an increased demand for food, water, housing , energy , healthcare , transportation, and more. And all that consumption contributes to  ecological degradation, increased conflicts, and a higher risk of large-scale disasters like pandemics .

Poverty   - is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food , clothing and shelter .   Across the lifespan, residents of impoverished communities are at increased risk for mental illness , chronic disease , higher mortality, and lower life expectancy . Children make up the largest age group of those experiencing poverty.

As the health and socioeconomic crises wrought by COVID-19 reversed pre-pandemic poverty-reduction gains, Duterte’s economic team last year adjusted the 2022 poverty rate under the Updated 2017-2022 Philippine Development Plan (PDP) to 15 to 17.5 percent from the more ambitious 13 to 15 percent at the start of this new administration.

Illiteracy   - the quality or state of being illiterate. especially: inability to read or write. a mistake or crudity (as in speaking) typical of one who is illiterate .   A person who cannot read and write struggles to know their rights, to vote, to find work, to pay bills and to secure housing. They also may have low self-esteem or feel emotions such as shame, fear and powerlessness, which can often lead to isolation.

According to the functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey, six out of 100 Filipinos aged five and above were illiterate, which means about six million Filipinos cannot properly read or write basic messages. However, the literacy rate reached 99.27% in 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 0.03%. The literacy rate, in the Philippines was 96.28% IN 2019. The basic literacy rate is 96.1% among females and 95.1% among males.

Disease - is a particular abnormal condition that adversely affects the structure or function of all or part of an organism and is not immediately often to any external injury . Diseases are often known to be medical conditions that are associated with specific signs and symptoms.   Consequently, beyond health issues, these diseases should and must globally be seen as a development concern, affecting education and knowledge acquisition, income and social status, productivity and economic growth and other direct and indirect components of human development such as gender equality and human rights.

Weak Health System   Health care - is the improvement of health via the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, amelioration or cure of disease, illness and others.   A weak health system can mean that, this means they are unable to provide high quality culturally appropriate healthcare or vital services such as those for mental health. Poor quality services give rise to mistrust and suspicion, which deter people from seeking healthcare when it is needed.

Human societies adapt to new challenge in contemporary societies through a combination of individual, communal, and systemic responses. This adaptability is essential to address the ever-evolving issues and complexities of the contemporary society.

Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach that involves governments, business, civil society, and individuals working together. It necessitates a commitment to sustainable practices and the responsible use of technology. Moreover, it highly requires fostering empathy, understanding, and cooperation among diverse people in the community and nation.

GROUP 1- Slogan (Physical, Social, Cultural environment) How can we navigate the ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies? GROUP 2- Answer the question with a twist ( show) How can we effectively combat climate change and protect the environment for future generations? GROUP 3 -Role playing- weak health system (poverty and overpopulation.)
