What is Disease? A disease is a condition that does not allow our body to function properly. It is an illness that affects the health of a person. Most diseases are caused by the microorganisms or commonly known as germs 6
Reasons for falling sick There are several reasons for falling sick: Lack of proper diet (food) Poor hygiene and unclean living conditions Lifestyle (lack of sleep, exercise ) 7

12 A disease is said to be communicable if it spreads from one person to another through direct or indirect contact. It spread through air, water and food Also spread through insects carrying gems, contact with sick person and animal bite Prevention Wearing a mask to prevent inhaling the germs. Keeping the surroundings clean. Washing hands at regular intervals with anti-bacterial soap to make the germs inactive. Covering your nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing to prevent the germs from spreading. Washing clothes of the patients regularly with a disinfectant like dettol . Vaccination A vaccine is a biological preparation that is injected into the body to reduce the risk of contracting certain diseases. It can be taken orally (through mouth) or through an injection in the muscle. The process of injecting vaccines into the body of a healthy person is called vaccination. Vaccines help our body fight against diseases. Some vaccines need to be taken periodically for complete protection, e.g., vaccine for polio. 15

19 Cancer Nutritional deficiency diseases Diabetes Body cells divide and grow without control to form tumours . The tumours invade different parts of the body and start damaging them. Insufficient intake of certain nutrients in our diet. It is a condition in which the patient suffers from high blood sugar. It is caused by excessive intake of sugar and lack of regular exercise.

Cleanliness of food and water Do not eat food that is left uncovered. Always keep the food covered. Do not eat roadside food items. Do not drink water directly from tap. Always drink water that is filtered. Boiling the water kills maximum germs. Hence it is safe to drink boiled water. Use clean water for cooking. Wash fruits and vegetables before consuming them. Always eat fresh food. Stale food may have germs growing in it. Consuming stale food makes you fall sick. 30
