Figure of Speech

Definition A figure of speech is  a way to express something without saying it directly . Figures of speech are used both in written and spoken language. They are used to stress, help explain, or exaggerate what is being said.

Types of figurative language Figures of Emphasis Figures of emphasis are used to call attention to what the writer or speaker is trying to say. Example: H yperbole : a form of exaggeration for emphasis or comic effect. Example: - I was dying of laughter. - I had a ton of homework. - These shoes are killing me. I rony : the use of words that mean the opposite of what is really meant. Example: -   This visit to the dentist should be fun. - It is so nice of you to tell my secrets. - She is a singer who sing like a crow.

Figures of Sound Figures of sound are used to create certain sound effects. A lliteration : a group of words that start with the same sound, usually a consonant.  Example: - A  s nake  s lithers in the  s and. - A good c ook c ould c ook as many c ookies as a good c ook who c ould c ook c ookies. - A b ig b ug b it the little b eetle, b ut the little b eetle b it the b ig b ug b ack. O nomatopoeia : a word that sounds like what it is meant to represent.  Example: - The bees  buzz  around the hive. - The corn went pop in the microwave. - The cat meowed for some milk.

Figures of Relationship Figures of relationship are used as a way to compare things or as a way to make it easier to understand. P ersonification : the giving of human qualities to something that is not human, such as an animal or an object. Example: - The sun kissed my cheeks. - The wind was angry that night. - The fire swallowed the entire forest. S imile : a stated resemblance between two things. It uses the words  like  or  as  to show similarity.  Example: - He is  as  sly  as  a fox. - She is swim like a fish. - My granny’s hair is as white as a goat.
