FORMULATIVE STATEMENT

WHAT IS FORMULATIVE STATEMENT - Formulating evaluative statement is a way of giving a better explanation to show the strength and weaknesses of something through writing. It is the writer’s way of explaining why strength is a strength and a weakness is a weakness based on evidence gathered.

- It is used in giving a sound judgement – a judgement that can be backed up or supported by valid reasons or proofs. - Evaluative writing has three key elements: Judgement, criteria, and evidence. The judgment is the writer’s opinion on the topic. the criteria are the reasons for the writer’s judgement. The evidence is a proof or information that provides support for the criteria.

How to formulate evaluative statements Read the text carefully and critically. Grasp the essence of the text. Check for possible fallacies in the arguments. examine which ideas are facts or opinions, make inferences or conclusions, and assess the overall quality of the text

SITUATION: An employer received a curriculum vitae of an applicant who was a fresh graduate. The company was looking for-someone who had a college degree, work experience, and skills. As the employer evaluated the credentials, though, he saw that what was lacking was work experience. The credentials were impressive-a student leader, an honor student, a volunteer in the community. He wanted to hire the applicant, but there was something missing: work experience. Hence, he wrote an evaluation and submitted it to his superior for consideration.

What is the significance of formulating evaluative statement? Why do we evaluate text? What are the ways on how we evaluate a text? Explain each.
