CONTRIBUTING FACTORS, AND PREVENTATIVE

SUMMARY
Briefing on a vehicle burglary incident occurring
on September 15
th
during late night hours
Vehicle burglaries are occurring at a record
setting pace in the San Antonio Metroplex
Common factors contributing to vehicle
burglaries
Vehicle burglary prevention
BACKGROUND
Vehicle burglars active in the 200 blk. Wildrose
on September 15
th
at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Burglars interrupted by homeowners
Warning shots were fired by one burglary
suspect, one striking the 16-year-old driver of
their escape vehicle
Vehicle crashed into a tree a short distance away
BACKGROUND
Investigators have obtained the names of the two
burglars checking vehicles; both 17 years old; long
history of thefts
The driver was placed on a new probation in
Juvenile Court in early September; long history of
thefts
Additional charges will be filed against all for the
stolen vehicle
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
Common factors lending to the increase are
unlocked vehicles and the high value targets left
in open view
New open carry laws provide a higher volume
of handguns left in vehicles
Vehicles keys and fobs left in unlocked vehicles
PREVENTION
Remove or hide all valuables BEFORE reaching your
destination
Do not stop between the bank and the destination where
funds will be delivered
Fully close windows and lock the vehicle
Set the alarm
Do not hide keys outside the vehicle or behind the fuel
door
PREVENTION
Do not leave firearms in vehicles
Console lock boxes, dashboard compartments, etc. are
easily defeated
Most effective are heavy metal lock boxes that mount
between the seat frame and floor or by braided metal
cable
