INTRODUCTION
TOPICS
Characteristics of living things
the need of living things
metamorphosis (complete & incomplete)

INTRODUCTION
Group the things into :
living and non living things

Living things grow1.
All animals are born small but as time passes they become bigger.
Look at your childhood pictures. You have grown from being a baby
to a child. All animals also grow.
Living things grow and change in height, size and appearance. When
they become old, they die

why do living things move??

Animals move from place to place in search of food,
water, shelter and to protect themselves from enemies.

Fish swim in water

Birds fly using their wings

Different living things move in different ways.
Identify other examples.....

Do plants move?
If they move, how do they move?

3. Living things need food and water
Living things need nutrients to stay alive. Without nutrients (food), living
things will die.

3. Living things need food and water
How do plants get food?

3. Living things need food and water
Plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis.

4. Living things breathe
Place your hand on your chest. What do you feel? We feel our chest moving up
and down.

4. Living things breathe
This movement is due to breathing. Animals breathe by different ways :
Animals like cows, cats and dogs that live on land, have lungs to breathe
Fish and some other animals that live in water, use gills to breathe
We cannot observe breathing movements in plants but they too take in air
from tiny holes present on leaves called stomata

5. Living things give response
We are able to feel because of our sense organs.
We have five sense organs : eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin.

5. Living things give response

6. Living things reproduce
Living things reproduce, that is, they produce other living beings of their
own kind. This is called reproduction.
Female animals give birth to young ones or lay eggs from which babies
hatch.
Can you mention some animals reproduce by laying eggs?
And some animal give birth?

Living things reproduce
Animals, such as cows, monkeys, dogs, tigers, elephants, and rabbits give
birth to babies
Animals such as birds, snakes, crocodiles, and lizards lay eggs
Most plants produce seeds that grow into new plants.

7. Living things have life cycle
Living things are born, grow and die

LIFE CYCLES
All living things go through a cycle called a life cycle. It refers to the stages
or changes that a living thing goes through during its lifetime.

LIFE CYCLES
All living things go through a cycle called a life cycle. It refers to the stages
or changes that a living thing goes through during its lifetime.

LIFE CYCLES
The caterpillar however, undergoes big changes of form before becoming an
adult butterfly. Its life cycle involves a process called metamorphosis.

LIFE CYCLES
Most animals including fish, reptiles, mammals and birds do not undergo
metamorphosis. These have very simple life cycles.

LIFE CYCLES
Insects and amphibians undergo metamorphosis.
