2. SANITATION WELL:- Introduction :- A sanitary well is one that is properly located, well constructed, and well protected from possible locations of contamination so as to ensure supply of safe water.

3. The important points safe wells :- Location. Lining . Parapet well. Platform. Drain . Covering . Hand-pump .

4. Location :- Should be away not less than 15m from sources of contamination - Distant between well and the house (<100m)

5. Lining :- should be built of bricks or stones set in cement up to 6 m deep, to allow the water to enter from the bottom and not from the sides of the well. - Lining should be curried 60-90cm above the ground.

6. Parapet well :- A parapet wall around the well up to the height of at least (70-75 cm) should be provided above the ground .

7. Platform:- Along with the parapet wall the platf onn should be made with cement concrete extending at least 1 min all direction.s . - It should have gentle slope outward leading to a drain built along its edges.

8. Drain :- A pucca drain should be built to collect the spilt and dirty water from the p latf onn of the well and this should be channeled to a drain or soak pit that is away from the well.

9. Covering . The top of the well should be covered well by a cement concrete cover to avoid direct contamination .

10. Hand-pump. A good sanitary well should be equipped with a hand pump to lift the water in a clean manner. When such a facility is not available, it is desirable to attach a chain and a bucket to the well for the common use.

11. Purification of water:- Steps in Well Disinfection :- 1 ) Find the volume of water in the well . Volume ( litres ) 3.14 x d²x h/4 x 1000h H -depth of water column ( metre ), D-diameter of well ( metre ) ( 1 cubic meter 1000 litres of water ) 2 ) Find the amount of bleaching powder required by " Horrocks Apparatus"* 3) Dissolve the bleaching powder required for disinfecting the well into a thin paste in a bucket-add more water till the bucket is % full-Stir well-Allow it to sediment for 5 to 10 mins . 4 ) The supernatant solution is chlorine solution-transfer to another bucket -> lower it below the water surface ->Stir violently by moving the bucket in horizontal n vertical movement.* 5 ) Contact period of 1 hour is given after which water can be drawn for use .
