NATURE / LANDSCAPE
Lleida is landscape. It offers a variety of
natural scenery to satisfy all tastes, all
intentions and all views. From the 3,143
metre altitude of the highest peak in the
Pyrenees, to the 78 metre altitude of the
lowest village, in the comarca (local dis-
trict) of El Segrià and from the aridness
of the far west to the lush vegetation of
the centre of Catalonia, the territory is
snow white, forest and grass green, trunk
and earth brown, rock grey, crop yellow
and water and sky blue. Mountains,
lakes, rivers, gorges, plains and slopes
are the natural habitats of thousands of
animal and vegetable species. All the
different types of terrain, all the colours
and all the smells; the whole spectacle.

One of the best places
in the world from which
to observe the sky
Between the comarques (local dis-
tricts) of La Noguera and El Pallars
Jussà there is a 40 km long limestone
massif covering an area of almost
20,000 hectares.
This is an area of transition betwe-
en the mountains and the plain and
between the Pyrenees and the Lands
of Lleida. Here, the rivers have car-
ved out spectacular gorges and have
created three great Montsecs (dry
mountains): Montsec d’Ares, Mont-
sec de Rúbies and Montsec d’Estall.
This location presents a series of
unique night-sky qualities which, in
combination with the existence of
the Astronomic Park, have led it to
be recognised as a UNESCO Starlight
Reserve and Touristic Destination, a
distinction of quality which is awar-
ded to places judged to be ideal for ac-
tivities associated with the night-time
environment and the observation of
the firmament. Montsec is the sixth
place in the world to have received
recognition as a Starlight Touristic
Destination and only the third to have
been designated a Starlight Reserve;
this shows that it is a place where we
can enjoy the sky in it is purest state.

THE AIGÜESTORTES
I ESTANY DE SANT MAURICI
NATIONAL PARK
The only National Park
in Catalonia
The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant
Maurici National Park is the only na-
tional park in Catalonia and can be
found in the heart of the Lleida Pyre-
nees, in the comarques of El Pallars
Jussà, El Pallars Sobirà, L’Alta Riba-
gorça and La Val d’Aran. Fir and pine
forests, alpine meadows and scree,
peaks reaching altitudes of around
3,000 metres, animals such as the
chamois, grouse, marmot and bear-
ded vulture, a multitude of streams
and 200 pools make this a majestic
and highly authentic high-mountain
landscape. The best walking routes
to discover the park include the Camí
dels Enamorats (Lovers Trail), the
Roca de la Cremada (Rock of the
Burned), the Estany Llong (Long
Pool) and the Tomb a l’Estany de
Sant Maurici pel Mirador i Amitges
(Walk round the Sant Maurici Pool
from the Vantage Point and Amitges).
As well as the more rugged trails,
the park also has adapted spaces
that are accessible for people with
reduced mobility or physical han-
dicaps. There is also the possibility
to do routes with an expert guide.

The Cadí-Moixeró
Natural Park
With a surface area of over 40,000 hec-
tares, the park includes territory in the
Lleida comarques of L’Alt Urgell and
La Cerdanya. The two great sierras
of Cadí and Moixeró are connected
by the Tancalaporta pass and form
an impressive 30 km-long mountain
barrier. Their altitude ranges from 800
m to 2,648 m and the most outstanding
peak is Pedraforca, one of the most
symbolic mountains in Catalonia for
mountaineers and a point of reference
for climbers. The park boasts more
than 400 km of sign-posted routes
which include GR-4, GR-7 and GR-
107 (the Good Men’s Route). The low
temperatures, altitude and high level
of humidity combine to permit the
presence of vegetation that is more
typical of northern Europe than the
Mediterranean. A National Hunting
Reserve was created in 1966, with the
chamois being its most prized trophy.
The Alt Pirineu Natural Park
Located in El Pallars Sobirà and L’Alt
Urgell and with an area of almost 70,000
hectares, the Alt Pirineu Natural Park is
the largest park of its type in Catalonia
and boasts a great variety of landscapes
and culture. One of the most outstanding
features is the Pica d’Estats, the highest
mountain in Catalonia (3,143.5m). It is
both a space of great natural value (in
terms of its geology, ecosystems, habitats
and animal and vegetable species) and a
historic setting for human activity. This
has helped to form its landscape, making
it rich in archaeological and architectu-
ral heritage and in primary sector acti-
vities such as livestock farming. It is de-
fined by the sum of its cultural heritage,
economic activity and natural beauty.

21 natural spaces
Catalonia’s Plan for Natural Spaces
of Interest has the objective of gua-
ranteeing the conservation of the
country’s biodiversity and natural
heritage, in line with its scientific,
scenic and educational value. In
the Lands of Lleida and the Pyre-
nees, there are 21 of these protec-
ted spaces. These include the Ivars
and Vila-sana pool (El Pla d’Urgell),
which has also been catalogued as
a Place of Importance to the Local
Community and a Special Protecti-
on Zone for Birds. It was recovered
in 2005, having previously been
dried out during the 1950s, and is
the largest pool in inland Catalonia,
with a surface area of 26 hectares
and a perimeter of some 6 km.

Reliving
history
Identity lies in scenery, gastronomy and
activity. Scenes, tastes and gestures. We
are while we are active. Ways of doing
and being, of celebrating, of building,
of expressing, which are often hidden by
the passage of time and which, in turn,
produce new day-to-day realities. But
witnesses remain: monuments, festivals
and constructions which help us to relive
those old ways of life, every year, and
which also keep the community alive.
This is a community that is discovered,
which participates and which is recog-
nised for itself. In each small corner there
is a legend, a tradition, a fair, a social
gathering, a hermitage or site with arc-
haeological remains to remind us who
we are and where we have come from.
“Falles” (burning logs) and fire, giants
and processions, churches and castles;
these are just a few of the elements that
stir our memories and carry us back into
a recent or remote past and whose ex-
pressions have now become our heritage.

Romanesque
Art and Architecture
The churches of the Vall de Boí form
the most outstanding group of Ro-
manesque constructions in Catalo-
nia and were declared a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 2000. The
churches are: Sta. Maria and St. Cli-
ment de Taüll —with its emblematic
“Pantocrator” (Christ Almighty), St.
Joan de Boí, Sta. Eulàlia d´Erill-la-
Vall, St. Feliu de Barruera, La Na-
tivitat and the Ermita de St. Quirc
de Durro, Sta. Maria de Cardet and
L´Assumpció de Cóll.
Erill-la-Vall houses the Roma-
nesque Centre of the Vall de Boí,
where it is possible to find: practi-
cal information, a shop, guided visit
services, activities and an exhibition
about everything associated with
the Romanesque art and architec-
ture of this area.

Cave Art
Of all the archaeological sites with
cave art that were declared part of a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
Roca dels Moros (Moors’ Rock) of
El Cogul (Les Garrigues) is consi-
dered one of the most important on
the Iberian Peninsula. There, it is
possible to see 45 figures carved in
stone which form part of a dance
scene that has been interpreted as
the performance of a phallic dance.
Different inscriptions show that this
site also served as a sanctuary during
Iberian and Roman times. Other arc-
haeological sites with cave art in the
Lands of Lleida can be found at L’Albi
and Les Borges Blanques (Les Garri-
gues), Alfés and La Granja d’Escarp
(El Segrià), Vilanova de Meià, Os de
Balaguer, Alòs de Balaguer, Artesa de
Segre and Camarasa (La Noguera),
Peramola (L’Alt Urgell), Tremp (El
Pallars Jussà) and Bellver de Cerda-
nya (La Cerdanya).

Castles and Fortresses
Few places in Catalonia can offer the
visitor such a great variety of castles
and fortresses as that found in the
comarques (local districts) of Lleida.
For centuries, this was a frontier ter-
ritory in which fortifications played
a significant role and this continues
to this day, albeit now in a historical
and touristic vein.

century monastery of Santa
Maria de Vallbona de les Monges,
in the comarca (local district) of
L’Urgell, is a Cistercian monastery
which shows the transition between
the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Together with the monasteries of
Poblet and Santes Creus, it forms
part of the Cistercian Route. It is the
only one of the three to have been
inhabited by women and also the
only one to have uninterruptedly
conserved its religious commu-
nity for over 850 years. It has been
declared a Monument of Historic
and Artistic Interest and an inn for
accommodating its visitors.

Lleida, the capital
The city of Lleida is the central fo-
cus of the whole territory of Lleida.
The city’s main monumental group
stands high on the Seu Vella hill, oc-
cupying a privileged position. The
historic buildings on this hill include
the Seu Vella (Old Cathedral), which
has been recognised as one of the gre-
atest artistic products of 13
th
century
Catalan architecture, and the Castell
del Rei/Suda (King’s Castle).
Other unique buildings to high-
light include: the seat of the Insti-
tut d’Estudis Ilerdencs (the former
Santa Maria hospital); the Paeria
(City Hall) building; the seat of the
Diputació de Lleida (provincial as-
sembly), the churches of Sant Llo-
renç and Sant Martí; the Diocesan
Museum; and the La Llotja and Palau
de Congressos (conference centres).
Lleida was also the city of birth of
such artists as Jaume Morera, Enric
Granados, Ricard Viñes and Leandre
Cristòfol. Structured by the River
Segre, the city is well communicated.
It is also a university centre and fair
and conference venue. In its central
Carrer Major (old high street), Lleida
also has one of the longest shopping
streets in Europe.

landscape
SPORT / ADVENTURE
In the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida,
it is possible to run, fly, ski, row, walk,
climb and pedal. This is a landscape to
admire but, above all, one to enter and
experience. It is there to be touched and
felt and there are innumerable ways in
which to do this. From the high moun-
tains down to the plain, each hidden
corner offers hundreds of possibilities
and is there to be discovered, one pi-
ece at a time, whether by ski, canoe,
paraglider, bicycle or simply on foot.
It is fresh air and a world without limits.
And in each season of the year there
are different opportunities, because
everything changes: the colours, land
and smells, but still continues to be the
same: nature, body and senses.

Enjoy the water
On the rivers and reservoirs – and
particularly those of the Pyrenees – it
is possible to find both white water
and calm water activities. Visitors
can enjoy rafting —the king of adven-
ture sports— but also canyoning, ri-
ver canoeing, kayaking, hot dogging,
hydrospeed and canoeing etc. It is
also possible to do motorised sports,
such as motor boating, jet skiing,
water skiing and donuts. Without
the motor, visitors can enjoy sailing,
and windsurfing, to say nothing of
underwater activities.
Enjoy the earth
One of the best ways to really get to
the very heart of the Lands of Lleida
is to discover all of their most hid-
den corners and the veins that carry
their lifeblood: the paths and trails.
Trekking and mountain biking are
becoming increasingly popular and
more and more routes and circuits
are being created. Caving, canyon
jumps, routes on horseback and by
4-wheel-drive vehicles and bungee
jumping are just some of the ways
to discover spectacular landscapes
through direct, first-hand contact.
Enjoy the air
The topography of the comarques
(local districts) of Lleida has crea-
ted numerous points from which it
is possible to escape the confines of
the earth and soar into the sky and
then contemplate the landscape from
the air. These lands regularly host
paragliding and hang-gliding word
championships and are also a habitual
venue for hot-air ballooning, gliding,
microlight and helicopter flights.

Lleida snow
The longest snow season in all the
Pyrenees, the highest ski slopes and
the largest skiable area in Spain all
make Lleida a skiing paradise. Its 11
ski resorts offer: a total skiable area
of 3,400 ha, 600 km of slopes, 80 ski
lifts, 800 snow cannons for making
artificial snow, 700 monitors, an
overall capacity of 80,000 people
per hour and 23,000 accommoda-
tion places.
On the white surface of these
mountains it is possible to enjoy:

to your plate
Cuisine and food products vary from one
place to another in the same way that
the natural environment and patterns of
human settlement also vary. The Lands
of Lleida are therefore defined by a wide
variety of products which, given their
recognised quality, have generated an
almost infinite range of quality dishes.
In the Pyrenees, the most important food
products are meat, fish and game from the
local herds, rivers, meadows and forests.
Typical dishes include: stews, cured meats,
turnips and cabbages, soups, mushro-
oms, cheeses and butters. In the Lands of
Lleida to the south, the salient products
are pork, minor game, kitchen garden
and orchard products, fruit and dry land
produce. Typical dishes include: rabbit,
snails, artichokes, spinach, pears, apples,
olive oil and wine. Each dish represents a
different natural setting, but they all have
a single common ingredient: when you
prepare your table with products from
the Lands of Lleida, you really bring the
taste of the land to the palate.

The late Romanesque and gothic transition style mo-
nasteries of Poblet, Vallbona de les Monges and Santes
Creus were founded in the 12
th
century and constitute
one of the most outstanding groups of inhabited Cis-
tercian buildings in Europe. They are also the definitive
expression of the artistic, cultural and historic legacy of
this part of inland Catalonia. The three centres have been
declared Monuments of Historic and Artistic Interest
by the Spanish state and Poblet has also been declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cistercian order was
founded in France in the year 1098 by a group of monks
who swore to live according to the Rule of Saint Benedict:
prayer, work, austerity, meditation and poverty. As well
as the three monasteries, the Cistercian Route will also
allow visitors to discover the traditions, gastronomy, crafts
and natural spaces of the 65 municipalities in the area.

This route includes three peculiar museums: the Museum of
La Conca Dellà, the Museum of River Rafters at Pont de Cla-
verol and the Ecological Museum of the Valls d’Àneu at Esterri
d’Àneu. These are different types of museums but with one
common denominator: they are all references to the past of
this territory. The Museum of La Conca Dellà and the Museum
of Coll de Nargó take us on a trip back to the most remote of
times when this area was inhabited by dinosaurs. There are
guided visits to the cretaceous remains of Basturs, where a
large number of dinosaur eggs can be seen, some of which are
gathered together in nests. Visitors can also visit the Posa site,
which includes a set of more than 2,000 remains that show the
presence of feeding manta rays. The River Rafters’ Museum
offers the possibility to travel back to a reality that is rather
closer to us: the world of river rafters. This lost trade survived
until the 1930s when the building of reservoirs made trans-
portation along the river impossible. Finally, the Ecological
Museum of the Valls d’Àneu shows us the traditional everyday
life of the mountains which is illustrated in different rooms at
Casa Gassia. Visitors are also
advised to look at the enclosed
villages of Peramea and Esca-
ló, the abandoned settlement
of Santa Creu de Llagunes and
the Timber Museum of Àreu.

Year 1000:

for a new millennium
The Romanesque Route
At the same time that the counties that lie to the south of
the Pyrenees broke free from the Empire of Charlemag-
ne, they underwent a deep-seated artistic renovation
with the introduction of the Romanesque style which
had emerged in the north of Italy in about the year 1000.
This then became the main movement in architecture,
painting and sculpture in this area until the end of the
13
th
century when the gothic style began to take over.
Although the Romanesque style spread across the whole
geography of Lleida, its greatest expression is to be found
in the Vall de Boí in the form of a set of nine temples that
have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Romanesque Centre of the Vall de Boí, located next
to the church of Erill-la-Vall, is the place responsible
for disseminating information about this and related
themes to visitors.
L’Alta Ribagorça The churches of the Vall de Boí
(L’Alta Ribagorça) form the most outstanding set of Ro-
manesque constructions in Catalonia and were declared
a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. They include
the churches of Boí, Santa Maria and Sant Climent of
Taüll, Durro, Barruera and Erill-la-Vall. The Pantocrator
(Christ Almighty) of Sant Climent de Taüll is one of the
most emblematic elements in the group.
La Val d’Aran The first surprising feature of the Val
d’Aran resides in their characteristic pointed belfries which
show a clear Gascon influence. As well as their Romanes-
que and gothic architecture, the interiors of the churches
of Bossòst, Vielha, Escunhau, Arties, Tredòs, Salardú and
Unha also house extensive sets of mural paintings and
relevant works of Romanesque imagery, including the
Christ of Mijaran and the Holy Cross of Salardú.

monuments, museums and emblematic medieval cons-
tructions. These unique natural settings and countryside
bring visitors closer to the birth of Catalonia, a territory
which emerged from the counties of the Pyrenean and
Pre-Pyrenean fringes. The route is divided according to
the thirteen old counties, seven of which are located in
the Lands of Lleida. It is possible to travel through this
area, from place to place, following two 5-day itineraries,
or to make a series of weekend visits to one county or
another. The routes, which are theme-based, make it
possible to discover the power of some of the territory’s
noble women, its different religious beliefs, the meaning
of different images from the medieval period, the first
texts written in the Catalan language and the struggles
for power.

One of the most differentiating cultural elements of
the comarca (local district) of Les Garrigues is its vaul-
ted stone shelters; these are dry stone constructions
which are closely linked to the growing of olive trees.
Long days spent working in the fields and far from the
villages made it necessary to have somewhere to rest the
working animals and for rural workers to shelter. The
peculiar way in which these shelters are constructed,
without anything being used to bind the stones together
and with dirt-covered barrel vault ceilings, gives the
outward impression of them being small mounds of
earth. Around 1,100 of these constructions have been
catalogued in Les Garrigues. This route takes visitors to
nine of them and also to some other stone constructions,
including water deposits, channels and tanks.

The Cathars, who were also known as the “good men” or “per-
fect people”, were men and women of a rigid morality who re-
jected wealth, did not believe in the Old Testament and rejected
the Catholic Church and the feudal rights of the nobility of
their time. As a result, they were declared heretics. This route,
which begins at the sanctuary of Queralt (Berga) and ends at
the Castle of Montsegur (France), follows the migratory paths
used by the Cathars during the 12
th
and 14
th
centuries as they
fled from the persecution of the crusaders and the Spanish
Inquisition. The itinerary, which can be followed on foot,
on horseback or by mountain bike, follows a long distance
footpath (GR-107) which allows walkers to discover medieval
settlements, Romanesque churches and castles. As well as the
historical aspect, the route runs through the protected area
of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, where it is possible to visit
the municipal district of Gósol. From this village, a variant
of the route goes off to Josa de Cadí, Tuixent, La Coma, Sant
Llorenç de Morunys, Coll de Jou, Odèn, Timoneda, Lladurs
and Solsona, before finally reaching the Miracle shrine.

This route is an ethnographic journey through seven
municipalities in the comarca (local district) of L’Alt
Urgell whose central theme is to provide an insight into

The capital of the territory can be discovered in many diffe-
rent ways, but one of the most spectacular is by visiting the
most iconic treasures of the city, which are the icons of its
very history. For example, the Paeria Palace, which is the
present seat of the City Council, is one of the most impor-
tant examples of Romanesque-style civil architecture in
Catalonia and contains monumental remains which date
from the 5

century BCE through until the 18

century CE.
The Seu Vella hill, which provides the most iconic image
of the city and its best vantage point, also houses the lon-
gest historic walled perimeter in Europe, the old Muslim
fortress known as of La Suda and the Seu Vella cathedral, a
Romanesque-Gothic architectural ensemble consisting of
a temple, cloister and bell tower. Meanwhile, the city’s Sant

The remains of the old city walls, churches, Andalus
baths and the medieval prison. This route takes in the
main archaeological sites that have been unearthed in
the historic centre of Lleida and is based on four main
attractions which are complemented by lesser sites
located on the premises of various commercial establish-
ments. Here, visitors will find the remains of what were
once the walls and towers of the city, back in medieval
times and during the Andalus and feudal periods. They

When Ramon Berenguer IV, the Count of Barcelona,
began the siege of Lleida’s Muslim city from Gardeny
Hill in 1149, he received the support the Knights Templar
militia, a mediaeval religious institution. Once the city
had been taken, in appreciation for their help, the Count
gave the militia several properties, including Gardeny
Hill. Nowadays, over 800 years later, visitors can discover
what the Templar base was like and revisit the way of
life and the ideals of the Templar order. The Centre for
Interpretation offers visitors a piece of the history of
the city of Lleida in a very didactic and accessible way.
Together with the towns of Miravet, Montsó, Peníscola
and Tortosa, Gardeny forms part of the “Domus Templi”
Knights Templar Route”. The site also offers an infor-
mation office and other tourism services.

The province of Lleida contains 16 of the prehistoric sites
which form part of the group located in the Mediterra-
nean arc that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1998. Of these remains, it is particularly relevant
to highlight the Roca dels Moros (Moors’ Rock), in the
municipalityof El Cogul. This site, which belongs to the
Palaeolithic period, was discovered in 1908 and con-
tains 42 human and animal figures, which are grouped
together in hunting scenes, as well as over 250 other
prints. Another site worthy of mention is the Bronze
Age Cova, or Balma (Cave) dels Vilars, near the village
of Os de Balaguer.

For two centuries the Lands of Lleida formed the fron-
tier between two civilisations: the Arab and Christian
worlds. Several castles still remain as silent witnesses
of those times. Scattered across the territory of Lleida,
although not immense fortresses, they are majestic
and well conserved, often standing on hilltop sites to
guarantee the security of frontier areas and as visible
symbols of power. They can be found in El Pallars Jussà,
La Noguera, La Segarra, L’Urgell and Les Garrigues.
Some of these castles are now also venues for music
concerts on summer nights.
La Noguera The Castle of Montsonís still conserves
its prison and a secret escape passage. The Castle of La
Ràpita (private). The Castle of Os de Balaguer currently
houses the Bell Museum of Catalonia. The Castle and

The Castle of Montclar is renowned for the stairway
to its noble quarters, its music room, library, stately

gothic-style arch on its facade, its spacious halls and

re, paintings, cellar, dungeon and a lovely bedroom. It
houses objects from various historical periods and has
a secret passage and interesting collection of arms. The
Castle of Vicfred has a 2 km-long secret passage which is
hidden behind a small door. The Tower of Vallferosa is
one of the best examples of 10

century European mili-
tary architecture. The strategic position of the Castle of
Les Sitges made it an important protagonist in the High
Middle Ages during the struggle between Christians
and Saracens. The Castle of de Concabella houses the
Centre for Interpreting the Castles of the River Sió. El
Pallars Jussà The Castle of Mur offers spectacular
views over the Tremp river basin and the Terradets
reservoir. Features to highlight include the system for
using water and the capitals of its cloister. The Castle of
Llordà is one of the best examples of residential archi-
tecture from the high medieval period in Catalonia. It
is possible to organise guided visits to the Museum of
the Conca Dellà. More examples of frontier castles can
be found in the remains of the medieval fortresses of
Sant Gervàs, d’Orcau and Guàrdia de Mur and there
are also a number of watchtowers scattered across the

The Sió is a small, little-known river with a limited flow, but it
is long and has served as a frontier space that has shaped the
history of this area and also created a common geographical
space for social, cultural and economic communication. In
the 10
th
, 11
th
and 12
th
centuries, these frontier castles formed
a line of defensive that protected this territory from the Arab
forces. The Sió, which rises near Gàver, in the upper part of La
Segarra, runs for about 70 km, crossing La Segarra, L’Urgell
and La Noguera, until it finally flows into the River Segre near
Balaguer. It is possible to visit a number of castles along its

In the spring of 1906, Pablo Picasso and his then partner,
Fernande Olivier, arrived at the village of Gósol. The
last stretch of their journey was made riding on a mule,
with Picasso carrying only a few things: some clothes,
his easel and a few boxes containing his brushes and oils.
In August of the same year, on their way back to Paris,
the couple took with them a small caravan of mules, so
Picasso had evidently done a lot of painting. At Gósol,
Picasso painted some of the most representative works
of modern art. This stay had been crucial for his artistic
research. The Picasso Route starts at Guardiola de Ber-
guedà and ends at Bellver de Cerdanya. The itinerary
is signposted with yellow markers as afar as Gósol and
then with white and yellow ones from Gósol to Bellver
de Cerdanya.

The famous Camí de Sant Jaume (Way of Saint James),
which unites the many paths to Santiago de Compostel·
la, also has a number of sections which pass through the
Lands of Lleida. One of these routes takes travellers
through the history and culture of the Way, providing
instructions about how to do the pilgrimage, maps and
ideas of where to stay along the route. The main branch
of the Way that runs through Catalonia goes from Sant
Pere de Rodes (in the extreme east of the peninsula) to
the monastery of Montserrat. The section from Mont-
serrat to Alcarràs (in the extreme west of Catalonia)
mainly passes through the Lands of Lleida. This 140
km long route can be done in 5 stages. Other transversal
variants within the territory pass through Tàrrega and
other settlements in L’Urgell and Balaguer or come from
Tarragona and pass through Vallbona de les Monges and
Bellpuig before reaching Lleida.

The geographic centre of Catalonia lies in the municipal
area of Pinós and is indicated by a compass carved out of
stone. It can be found near the shrine of Santa Maria de
Pinós, a centre of religious devotion for the local inha-
bitants. Following the path to the village of Ardèvol, it is
possible to climb up what used to be the defence tower of
its former castle, which dates from before the 11th century,
and from there, you can enjoy an excellent panoramic
view. Continuing on in the direction of Su, you will find
the Miracle shrine, with its majestic 23 metre-high and
12 metre-wide 18
th
century baroque-style altarpiece. This
work by Carles Morató is one of the most important of
its kind in Catalonia. It is then on to Solsona, the capital
of the comarca (local district), to visit its historic centre,
cathedral, ice well, Diocesan and Local District Museum
—which houses important examples of Romanesque and
baroque style art—, the Centre for Touristic Interpretation
of El Solsonès and the Knife Museum. The church of Sant
Esteve d’Olius, an example of 11th century Lombard Ro-
manesque architecture with a crypt dating
from the same period, is just another 4 km
after Solsona. The route finishes , just a few
metres away, at the Catalan Modernist (Art
Nouveau) style cemetery of Olius, a work

This small, little-known, Pyrenean valley has been
slipped into the pages of various successful novels in
Catalan literature and has been mentioned in some of
the books written by Jaume Cabré, Maria Barbal, Josep
Maria Espinàs, Joan Lluís and Josep Virós. The Àssua
valley and El Batlliu project offers these readers five
thematic routes that run through its real and fictitious
geography. These routes have been designed thinking
about those who love reading and walking, but they
are also for anyone who likes to let themselves fall in
love with the type of scenery that forms the essence of
a novel. The shortest of these routes takes about 2 hours
and the longest up to 12. The website dedicated to the
project provides detailed instructions, a technical file

During the years of the Second World War, thousands of people
crossed the Pyrenees either running away from Nazi brutality
or in order to join up with the allied army in the North of Afri-
ca or in the UK. The mountain passes bore silent witnesses
to their odyssey. It has been calculated that between about
60,000 and 80,000 fugitives crossed through these passes.
Through the village of Sort village - where visitors can visit the
prison-museum - passed one of the routes that connected the
two French departments of Ariège and Haute Garonne to El
Pallars Sobirà. This route is known as “The Path to Freedom”.
This route is now well sign-posted and allows the hiker to
follow in the footsteps of those wartime travellers. The route,
whose Catalan side runs through the High Pyrenees Natural
Park, begins at the municipality of Seix and ends at Alòs d’Isil.
Together with the beauty of the landscape, visitors will also
find complete information about the heritage value of this
area, which makes this a significant example of what has come
to be named “Historical Memory Tourism”.

The Ignatian Way follows the route that the Jesuit priest
Saint Ignatius of Loyola (Basque Country) followed to
the Cave of Sant Ignasi at Manresa (Catalonia). This
route follows the same course as the Way of St. James,
but in the opposite direction, and crosses the comarques
(local districts) of El Segrià, El Pla d’Urgell, L’Urgell
and La Segarra along a route signposted with orange
arrows. In L’Urgell, the route turns off to Verdú, where
it is possible to visit the shrine to Sant Pere Claver, a
Jesuit missionary who was born in this municipality

The L-2 is a section of the defensive line that was cons-
tructed in the comarques (local districts) of L’Urgell and
La Segarra during the Spanish Civil War as a fortified
military line to defend the republic. The route through
what was a zone of conflict during the war is a project
designed with historic rigour to meet the dual objective
of recovering the collective memory and conserving and
disseminating the principles of freedom and democracy.
It has been organised into three thematic blocks organi-
sed around a central thread which places the emphasis
on the individual and on human suffering. The first block
presents arbitrary actions and reprisals in the republican
zone, starting with the actions of uncontrolled elements
and the SIM. The second shows how difficult life was in
the immediate rear guard. The third block will show how
life was under the newly imposed Francoist regime. It

The Arnau Mir de Tost Route is an authentic trip back
through time to the 11
th
century when the sierra of El
Montsec served as a frontier between Muslim and Chris-
tian territories. It was at that time that Arnau Mir de
Tost crossed this frontier and captured Àger from the
Muslims, thereby extending the Christian-held territory
towards the south. He left behind a large and important
patrimony: castles, watchtowers, palaces, churches, etc.
The route features as its main points of interest the castle
and religious community of Sant Pere d’Àger, the castle
of Mur, the collegiate church of Santa Maria de Mur and
the castle-residential palace of Llordà.

On this route, visitors can relive some of the customs
of other times and discover important jewels of Roma-
nesque art and architecture. Leaving Solsona by the
C-55, visitors should turn off towards the Sant Ponç
reservoir and the church of Santa Margarida de Navès
and then go on towards Berga, following the River Aigua
d’Ora until they reach the foot of the Busa cliff. In this
wide valley, they will find the Ecological Museum of
the Vall d’Ora, where it is possible to learn about the
old sawmill and visit the Ca l’Ambròs mill. Visitors can
also go to the old school, which now houses a small tool
museum. They can then cross a Romanesque-style
bridge and see the monument in memory of Count
Guifré - who is said to have been mortally wounded
in this valley - and visit the hermitage of Sant Lleïr.
Later, visitors will find a church that belonged to the
10th century Romanesque monastery
of Sant Pere de Graudescales. Finally,
on the route back to Solsona, along the
C-26, visitors can visit the Romanesque

The Lakes Train is a historic touristic railway convoy that
connects Lleida to La Pobla de Segur by rail. It crosses
three different comarques (local districts) and therefore
allows travellers to discover this highly varied territory
from the window of a train: the fertile fields of the plain,
the rough, calcareous and conglomerate cliffs and gorges
of El Montsec, the calm waters of four lakes... and all of this
with the peaks of the Pyrenees in the background. This is a
route that can be followed every day on conventional trains
and the trip can be combined with a wide range of parallel
activities offered in each of the comarques. Visitors should
consult the route website to discover the days of the year
on which this route can be covered on a historic train. Once
visitors arrive at La Pobla de Segur, they can complement

The Llobregós River Valley, in La Segarra, is a Space
of Natural Interest, within the triangle formed by the
villages of Sanaüja, Biosca and Massoteres. The valley
offers a number of possible routes to complete on foot
or by MTB, with walkers using their own instincts or
following one of four sign-posted routes. This is an area
with unique characteristics as far as its geological for-
mation, vegetation and fauna are concerned. In short,
this 1,190 hectare site forms part of what is a fragile and
vulnerable but well-conserved area.

This historical route, which is now sign-posted, used to
be used by reapers, carriers, militia, bandits, musicians
and smugglers. In particular, reapers used to travel along
it at the beginning of June as they went looking for work.
In 1906, the painter Pablo Picasso also followed it during
his stay in the area. This seven to eight hour trek starts
at Gósol and ends at Bellver de Cerdanya, crossing the
Cadí Ridge along the way. During the trek, visitors can
discover the Pyrenean landscape and the fauna of the
Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. In winter, the route can
be followed by skies or on snowshoes. There is also the
option of doing the Reapers’ Route -also known as the
Cerdanya Way- over two days, because the Cèsar August
Torras mountain shelter offers the possibility of making
an overnight stay before continuing along the route on
the following morning.

This route is based on the myths and legends of the
Pyrenees which have been compiled in the books of
Pep Coll and Joan Obiols. The Minairons (elves) are
tiny and mischievous beings that can be found inside
the receptacles in which their owners keep them or up
in the mountains and in hidden corners on Saint John’s
Eve (Midsummer’s Eve). Rather than a route as such, this
is more of a proposal which groups together different
locations in the Aguilar valleys that can be visited in
any order. Visitors will pass the Guàrdia D’Ares boulder
quarry, the Taús scree, the Biscarbó dolmen and the
Encantades (delights) of Castellàs de Cantó. They can
also visit Argestues and Noves de Segre and discover
their legends.

Take a stroll to discover the markedly rural character of the
landscapes of El Solsonès, where the masies (farmhouses)
and churches that are scattered across the territory shape a
landscape of remarkable beauty. Having visited Solsona and
its historic centre, visitors walking along this route will first
cross the River Cardener and pass the Llosa del Cavall reser-
voir, then visit the church and the Romanesque cloister and
see the Museum of the Vall de Lord and the historical centre of
Sant Llorenç de Morunys, a village which is popularly known
as Sant Llorenç dels Piteus (due to the its industry past which
was associated with the production of Piteu cloth). Walkers
will then go on to visit the Font Puda, the village of La Coma,
the source of the River Cardener and the Port del Compte
pass, before going through the Coll de Jou and on to Cambrils,
where it is possible to visit the salt mines. Trekkers can then
continue on towards the Serra Seca vantage point, the Clop
Bridge –under which the River Ribera Salada flows -, Castellar
de la Ribera - where the rural school can be visited -, and on
until they come back to Solsona once again.

This is a 31-kilometre circular route which can be done
on foot, by MTB or by car. The route starts at Pont d’Orrit
and passes through several villages, including Torre de
Tamúrcia (which houses the Vulture Centre), Espluga de
Serra, Castellet and Sapeira. This is a valley surrounded by
the calcareous and conglomerated mountain ranges, like
the Sant Gervàs ridge, that separate the Pre-Pyrenees from
the Pyrenees. It has landscapes of great natural, cultural
and scenic interest and is a location that simply emanates
peace and tranquillity under the calming influence of its
ever-present sheep. This is a very low-difficultly route and
is suitable for people of all ages. There are birds here all
the time and especially birds of prey such as the bearded
vulture, common vulture and Egyptian vulture and also
the golden eagle, eagle owl and peregrine falcon. In spring
and summer, migratory birds can also be seen here, as can
other species of fauna such as the wild cat, fox, wild boar
and, on occasion, the Pyrenean chamois.

The Ivars and Vila-sana Pool was recovered in 2005
after it had been dried out in the 1950s. It is the largest
inland lake in Catalonia and its fourth largest wetland
area. As a result, it is an excellent place to visit in order to
observe over 210 different species of birds. It is equipped
with observation points and picnic areas and also offers
bicycles for hire and two information points, where it
is also possible to hire binoculars. Over the year, it has
also been a venue for a series of educational, sporting
and leisure activities. As well as the intrinsic interest of
this space, the pool is at the centre of four of the most
important tourist routes through the comarca (local
district) of El Pla d’Urgell: the ornithological route, the
horseback route, the route through the surrounding
municipal areas and the variant of the Catalan section
of the Way of Saint James.

Although Les Garrigues is a dry comarca (local dis-
trict) which is known, above all, for its dry land crops,
its northern part is irrigated by the waters of the Canal
d’Urgell. This is where its capital, Les Borges Blanques,
and Juneda - the two municipal districts through which
this circular route runs – are located; it is possible to start
the route from either of these settlements. Although
the route is very flat, visitors will find a number of wa-
terfalls which were once used to generate electricity.
This explains some of their names: “Primera màquina”
(first machine), “Segona màquina” (second machine)
and Nou Salts (New Falls). Just outside Juneda, there
is also a leisure area known as Salt Desfet (Dismantled
Falls). Almost the whole route follows a small footpath
that runs alongside the water in the shade of large trees;
in summer, this offers much appreciated shade in this
part of inland Catalonia.

L’Alta Ribagorça stands out for its great number of lakes
and the waters that flow with force and which define the
network of pathways that cross the comarca (local dis-
trict) from north to south and from east to west. There
are age-old paths, horseshoe trails, royal routes, livestock
paths and paths through the mountains that, above all,
allow us to come into contact with the natural environ-
ment by examining all of its hidden corners. The Water
Route runs along different stretches of this network of
traditional pathways, closely following the main rivers
that pass through the comarca and connecting the tail
of the Escales reservoir and the monastery of Lavaix, at
El Pont de Suert, to the spa of Caldes de Boí.

From the south to the north of the Lands of Lleida, from
the plain to the mountains, there are several areas where
different bird species have found a place to settle and
breed. In the south of Lleida, for example, there are two
wetland areas: the Aiguabarreig (river confluence) and
Utxesa, both in the comarca (local district) of El Segriàt
The Aiguabarreig is a breeding area for heron species,
including the black-crowned night heron, the cattle
egret, the little egret and the squacco heron. Visitors
can arrive here via the LP-7041, the road which leads
towards Soses, Seròs and La Granja d’Escarp.
To get to Utxesa, visitors can leave from Torres de
Segre, where it is easy to see the western marsh harrier
throughout the year. The villages of Alfés, Sarroca de Llei-
da, Llardecans, Sudanell and Albatàrrec can all be visited
along the way. This is a steppe area, where visitors are sure
to see the calandra lark, the thekla lark or the Eurasian
dotterel in winter; if they go there in summer, the lesser
grey shrike, the greater short-toed lark, the European bee-
eater and the European roller can also be are seen there.
The area around Menàrguens is the perfect place to
see the lesser kestrel, as this is an area where there are
several nesting towers. Visitors can then continue along
the route following the C-12 and C-13 towards Montsec.
There are then 14 sign-posted routes to guide them to
the best places for bird watching. Along these routes, it
is possible to observe birds of prey such as the bearded
vulture, Bonelli’s eagle and the Egyptian vulture. Once at
Tremp, it is possible to see other birds of prey including
the bearded vulture. Visitors can then continue on up
towards the Pyrenees, following the N-260 and C-13, as
far as the small village of Espot which is the entry point to

see such nesting species as the black woodpecker, the
alpine chough and the red crossbill. At the Escalarre
marsh, which can be reached by following the same C-13,

to observe such as the little grebe, the great cormorant,
the grey heron, the common moorhen, the mallard and

The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park
offers mountains over 3,000 metres high, spectacular
lakes and waterfalls, signposted footpaths for walkers
of every level and a wide range of other leisure activities
associated with trekking. The Val d’Aran, with over 300
km of sign-posted footpaths, guarantees the widest va-
riety of trekking options, so choosing a route is the most
difficult thing to do. This comarca (local district) also

which are accessible to cyclists of all levels. These range
from a simple, but evocative, ride to the steepest, most

Leaving the village of Almatret, at the southern end
of the comarca (local district) of El Segrià behind, this
route offers walkers the possibility of enjoying one of
the exceptional landscapes of the Lands of Lleida. This
is one of the few areas in the territory visited by the Ri-
ver Ebro and it is possible to find the remains of mining
activity on its banks. Its location, on a high plateau, offers
privileged views over the river meanders. This was one
of the scenes of the Battle of the Ebro and at the end of
the route, at the La Pena cliff, it is possible to see former
combat trenches and an embedded mountain bunker
which have been maintained in perfect condition. The
route, which is well-signposted, can be followed on foot
or by MBT.

This old railway line, which was used in the building of
some of the hydroelectric plant infrastructure of the
Pyrenees, is now a cycle-tourism and trekking route.
The former tracks can still be seen in places. There are 5
kilometres of amazing views along the stretch between
the Estany Gento pool and the waters of Capdella. The
route continues as far as the village of Espui and the
neighbouring Àssua valley, in the comarca (local district)
of El Pallars Sobirà. In order to get to the starting point,
walkers must first go to Capdella (L-S03 road) and the
Sallente reservoir where there is a cable-car to the Estany
Gento pool (which operates from July to September).
There is an alternative route from Espui that follows a
forest track through the Triador col.

The “Living Pathways” route aims to promote trekking
as an instrument for local development by creating a
circular route around the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant
Maurici National Park. This initiative started with the
recovery of the historical paths that, since time imme-
morial, have interconnected the valleys that surround
this national park. This route joins together different
comarques (local districts), valleys, and inhabited nuclei,
allowing visitors to discover the enormous natural and
cultural heritage of this part of the Pyrenees.
These traditional paths therefore offer a trekking
experience that also guarantees their preservation and
rehabilitation and the development of the villages in
the area of influence of the national park by offering
different types of sustainable, non-motorised tourism.
These 238 km of walking paths make it possible to dis-
cover the human and natural landscapes associated
with these routes and the history and culture that they
represent. These are paths which join together the six
different valleys that house the present Aigüestortes i
Estany de Sant Maurici National Park: the Valls d’Àneu,
Vall d’Àssua, Vall Fosca, Vall de Boí, Vall de Barravés and
Val d’Aran. These valleys are joined by three historic
mountain passes: the Port de Vielha, Port de la Bonaigua
and Port de Rus.
The walk around the national park can be covered in
7 or 9 one-day stages, depending on the type of trekking
undertaken and the physical fitness of the walker in
question. Each stage ends at a village where the walker
can stay overnight in a hotel or mountain shelter and
take advantage of this to get to know and enjoy the in-
tensively of village life and also the rich cultural heritage
of Romanesque art and architecture.

The Canal d’Urgell, which was built in the middle of the 1
st

century, crosses five of the comarques (local districts) of the
Lands of Lleida. It starts at Ponts (La Noguera), runs through
L’Urgell, El Pla d’Urgell and Les Garrigues and ends at Montoliu
de Lleida (El Segrià). It irrigates a total surface area of 90,000
hectares which have made the Lleida plain one of the most
fertile and productive areas in Catalonia. This generally flat
land makes this a particularly suitable area for pleasant walks
and it is possible to follow these 14 routes on foot or by bicycle,
following sign-posted itineraries of different difficulties and

There are many ways to reach the Utxesa reservoir in
the comarca (local district) of El Segrià and they all offer
something special for the visitor. Going there from Torres
de Segre, you should visit the part of the natural route that
runs for 2 km along the banks of the River Segre with its
vantage points, rest area and large colony of white stork.
You can also see the old mill, which has now been turned
into the Museum of Evolution, the castle walls, historic
houses and municipal church. Going on for another 3 km,
you will come to the bridge that crosses the Canal de Seròs.
Here, you can follow the nature route signs to Utxesa or
branch off and visit Carrassumada hill, from where it is
possible to visit the hermitage and enjoy views over the
landscapes of the comarca of El Segrià. If you go to Ut-
xesa from Sarroca de Lleida, you can follow a rural track
directly to the reservoir and just before you get there, you
will see the remains of the old castle and church of Sarroca.
Travelling from Aitona, you can visit the castle and then
go on to Utxesa following the Pathway across the Plains.
Then you can visit the “La Canadenca” hydroelectric
power station and the reservoirs of Ximo and Burgebut.

El Pallars Sobirà is a land of bridges, which were built in
mediaeval times in order to connect villages and valleys.
Most of them still continue to stand firm and look impo-
sing, even to this day, giving an idea of the large network
of bridle paths that El Pallars Sobirà still conserves.
Villages such as Gerri de la Sal, Unarre, Esterri d’Àneu,
Borén, Isil, Alós, Espot, La Torrassa, Escart, Tavascan,
Cassibrós, Lladrós and Lladorre are places where visi-
tors can enjoy these marvellous constructions which
represent an important part of the cultural heritage
of this comarca (local district). This itinerary follows
part of the trajectory of the River Noguera de Cardós,
crossing from one bank to the other by means of these
mediaeval bridges.

According to age-old tradition, water, wind, earth and
fire are the four elements that make up the world. They
are also what the iron industry needs to develop and in
the Vall Ferrera all four came together. This route, which
starts at Tírvia and ends at Alins, follows the same path
that donkeys used to tread in the past, loaded with iron
ingots which had been produced in the three forges of the
area. It is a route with a mild gradient which runs along
the left-hand bank of Noguera de Vallferrera River and
offers visitors the possibility to discover a heritage closely
linked to iron mining, which was first development in
Roman times and has persisted until the present. Visi-
tors can follow the interpretation routes through the
Bosc de Virós woods (the Costa dels Meners and Buiro
routes) and around Alins (the Falles d’Alins (waterfall)
and Torre de les Bruixes (witches’ tower) paths).

From north to south, this route runs through the munici-
palities where wines of the Costers del Segre Designation of
Origin are produced. This area extends from the mountains
of El Pallars Sobirà to the fields of El Segrià and Les Garrigues,
passing through La Noguera, L’Urgell and El Pla d’Urgell
along the way. By discovering the culture of wine, you will
also learn to understand these lands even better. This is a
walk through the gastronomy, culture and geography of
Lleida, with its wineries as the central theme and one which
will take you to the main attractions and monuments in
each area and which will also allow you to enjoy a number of
complementary activities. The route includes a selection of
restaurants which represent the cuisine of Lleida and which
are as varied as the territory itself. Broken down into seven

With the central theme of olive oil and the objective of
acquiring what is considered the best olive oil in the world,
it is possible to visit some of the places in the comarca
(local district) of Les Garrigues and the south of L’Urgell
and El Segrià which are included in the Les Garrigues
Protected Designation of Origen and to contemplate the
austere landscape of Les Garriges. In this dry territory, the
villages are small and dispersed, bearing witness to the
true star of the show: the olive tree. This tree is grown in
every small corner, on staggered terraces with dry stone
walls and on terrain where dry stone vaulted cabins are
often half-hidden from view. Autumn is harvest time and,
as well as the splendour and activity of the olive growing
landscapes, this is also the moment to see the process by
which olive oil is produced at the mills of the cooperatives
which are present in each village. It is also a time to visit the
rural museums and theme parks, castles, cave paintings
and Iberic remains. As well as the DOP Les Garrigues,
olive oil is also an important product in the comarca of La
Noguera, with a presence at its food fairs and it is possible
