Instructions

You are required to undertake basic measurements and calculations to determine the size, weight of
materials required in a construction environment. Below are tasks where you are required to measure
and calculate different items. You are then to write the correct answers in the space below. This is an
individual assessment however you may assist each other with holding tape measures.
Note:
You are required to take some photos of yourself undertaking this practical task. This evidence will be
added to the Ready Skills where you teacher/ assessor will be able to mark your assessment.
You can add pictures of your tools and equipment, your finalised completed calculations sheet and a
selfie in your PPE.

Activity 1 – Circumference and area of a circle volume and weight of a cylinder.
In this practical activity, you are required to perform some measurements and calculations that involve
the circumference and area of a circle, and the volume and weight of a cylinder.

To complete this activity you will need:
1. A bucket that is roughly cylindrical in shape
2. String
3. Marking pen
4. Tape measure
5. A known volume such as a milk bottle, drink bottle or measuring jug.
Step 1 - Calculate the circumference of a bucket (in m)

Step 3 - Calculate the volume of the bucket (in m3)

1. Measure a convenient height (example 300 mm) on the bucket. What is the height you
measured?

Confirm calculation by measurement
Fill the bucket with water to the height you measured (using a known volume such as a 2-litre milk
container).
2. How much water did it take to reach the marked height?
3. Convert the volume in litres to cubic metres (divide litres by 1000)
4. Was the volume of the bucket you measured using water, close to the volume you calculated?

Calculation
Calculate the weight of a bucket filled with water. Use the specific weight of water = 1,000 kg/m3)
This means that 1000 kgs of water would fill 1 m3, or better stated 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram. So,
19 litres of water = 19 kgs.

Activity 3 – Measure volume in m3
You are required to measure the volume in m
3
of a footing, slab or rectangular column and calculate the
appropriate quantity ratios for a concrete mix. You must select and use the appropriate piece of
measuring equipment for this task and complete the questions that are set out below

All equipment selected must be in good working order, and you must wear correct PPE throughout the
entire task. You must follow all safety instructions throughout the task. If at any time you are deemed to
be unsafe the assessor will stop your assessment, and this will be counted as your first attempt. You
must actively participate in the toolbox talk prior to beginning the task a be a part of the discussions


The measurements taken by you will be used to make the following calculations:
1. The length, depth, and height of the footing,
2. The amount of concrete needed to complete the job allowing for 10 % wastage
The ratio of cement: sand: aggregate: to be used for this task is 1: 2: 4



Activity 4 -Measure the dimensions of the footing, column, or pier.

must also show your working for the calculations.

Assessment Conditions

This assessment will be always conducted in simulated work environment at CIT Bruce under teacher
supervision during your normal CIT day. If at any stage the assessor deems the assessment to be unsafe
it will be stopped. Access to all resources, manual and standards is permitted. All mobile phones are to
be switch off during the assessment. You will have access to techniques, procedures, information,
resources, and aids which is normally be available on the worksite.

You may have at least two (2) attempts for this assessment.
