GENERAL OBEJECTIVE At the end of the teaching the student will be able to: Describe what is practical examination . Enlist the purposes of practical examination . Elaborate the phases of practical examination . Explain the advantages and disadvantages of practical examination .

Introduction Practical examination is type of examination that is concerned with the assessment of practical performance skills and practice competency acquired by a student during the course of a particular programme. The nursing profession uses practical Examination since long to assess the ability of nurses to perform a specific expected practical tasks or practice competencies .
Practical examination mainly help to fulfill the demand of a practical profession of assessing a psychomotor skill. It is considered most essential part of overall assessment. Theoretical knowledge lonely is not enough to become qualified in any profession .
PURPOSES To assess the practical skills and practice competencies of nursing students . To assess the development in affect domain of students by observing their reactions to real life or simulated situations . To assess the students problem solving skills . To assess the recording and reporting skills .
To assess how well the students are successful in transforming their theoretical knowledge in practice . To assess multiple performance tasks such as Diagnosis assessment, planning , implementation , communication and evaluation .
HOW TO CONDUCT A PRACTICAL EXAMINATION ⁉️⁉️
The conduction of practical examination involves 2 PHASES PLANNING CONDUCTING PHASE PHASE
WHAT IS PLANNING PHASE ❓
Planning phase of practical examination Consider the learning experience and learning objectives before planning the practical examination Decide the appropriate place for the practical examination Final practical must be conducted on Real life situations . For eg : patients admitted in respective ward of a hospital or a field area for community health nursing .
The exam should be conducted at place to which the students are familiar with before the examination so that they can be psychologically comfortable . The selected area must have adequate supply to carry out the expected nursing procedures. The area of examination should be planned to accommodate the nursing procedures and examiners .
The ward nurse managers or clinical in-charges must be informed well in advance so that they are well prepared to support in conduction of the practical examination. The overall evaluation criteria must be planned and the students must be informed about the evaluation criteria accordingly that they can prepare accordingly.
WHAT IS CONDUCTING PHASE❓
CONDUCTING PHASE OF PRACTICAL EXAMINATION Students and examiners must reach the place of examination as scheduled well in advance so that necessary changes may be adapted comfortably without any undue discomfort . Students must be called in a group and they must be conveyed with all the rules and regulations of the examination Students must be assigned with examination stations or patients by lottery method to avoid subjective bias .
Students must be assigned with routine nursing procedures performed by them regularly to make them psychologically comfortable with the practical examination . Stress free environment must be provided to students so that they can perform better . Practical examinations must proceed using the steps of the nursing process such as assessment , daignosis, planning , implementation, and evaluation .
Sufficient time must be given to the nursing student to perform the nursing procedure . Not more than 20 students must be examined a each examiner in a day . Any undue discomfort to the patient during practical examination should be avoided . On completion of the practical examination , the marks obtained by the students must be compiled and sent to the examination body i.e university or nursing board in a sealed envelope under confedentiality .
ADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES OF PRACTICAL EXAMINATION It provides an opportunity to assess the skills and competency acquired by the students . It also offers an opportunity to the examiners for assessing the use of compartmentalized knowledge in an integrated manner by a student while providing holistic nursing care to the patient .
An examiner also gets opportunity to assess the communication amd interpersonal skills of student in performing the nursing procedures . Students are also able to know about what they need to improove in theoretical and practical skills .
DISADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES OF PRACTICAL EXAMINATION It is not considered as standardized assessment practice when students are assesed while working with patients . It is not considered an objective method of assessment because they are chances of subjectivity and personal bias . It is a time consuming process for both examiners and students .
It is not a feasible method for assessing large group of students . Sometimes it is considered as unethical to expose patient for examining students . The emergencies and complex ward routines may be considered as disturbance factors to the smooth conduction of the practical examination .
