TITLE: “ Let Us Store Up Treasures In Heaven ” THEME : Practicing Biblical Christianity In What We Value Text: Matthew 6 :19-21

LET US STORE UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN (vv. 19-24)

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Our core values define us. They tell us why we do what we do . Our values are the reason for the choices we make, the company we choose, the lifestyle we adopt and the possessions we hold dear. As disciples of Jesus , our values must be shaped by the scriptures . These biblical values spring from our inner core as we abide in the truth , and they provide the impetus for our actions. (Roots and Wings – Edmund Chan)

Investment: the application of money for earning more money.  (finance) the purchase of a financial product or other item of value with an expectation of favorable returns . (Webster’s ) the practice of investment refers to the buying of a financial product or any valued item with an anticipation that positive returns will be received in the future.

Treasure : (n) something valuable (such as money, jewels, gold, or silver) that is hidden or kept in a safe place. : something that is very special , important , or valuable . : a person who is greatly loved or valued especially because of being very helpful.

Treasure: -( v) to value something ; appreciate or to put some worth on something/someone. -(ant) to devalue, depreciate (Webster’s)

The idea of invest is, you keep something now, or put it somewhere where it could gain something for you in the future. What you expect or project to have in the future, will determine the kind of value you put to what you are doing now. Such act is an act of treasuring something for a treasured purpose .

verse 19 thesaurizo and thesaurus (v) “store up, save, put aside” - valuing something what you are saving or investing. The object means “treasure, store, treasure box, store room”. Common greek word for “keep” ( tereo ) Matthew used thesaureo -emphasizes the value system that begins in the heart

There are only three things that are eternal. God, His Word, and Our soul

“ Where your TREASURE is ( the one you give value), there will your HEART be also.”

This is the greatest wisdom—to seek the Kingdom of heaven through contempt of the world. It is vanity , therefore, to seek and trust in riches that perish. It is vanity also to court honour and to be puffed up with pride. It is vanity to follow the lusts of the body and to desire things for which sever punishment later must come. “Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a Kempis

(continuation) It is vanity to wish for long life and to care little about a well-spent life. It is vanity to be concerned with present only and not to make provision for things to come. It is vanity to love what passes quickly and not to look ahead where eternal joy abides .
