PRE COLONIAL PERIOD

Pre Colonial Philippine Literature
*Pre Colonial Philippine Literature is a rich and diverse body
of oral traditions and writters works that existed before the
arrival of spanish colonizers in the 16th century.
*This Literature reflects the varied cultures, language
and histories of the numerous ethnic groups across the
Philippine archipelago .

Riddles Proverbs

Oral Traditions:
1.Epics (Epiko)
• Ancient Greek Adjective, "Epikos",
which means a poetric story.
•Long Narrative poem,which is usually
related to heroic deeds of a person of an
usual courage and unparalleled bravery.

Examples:
• Biag ni Lam-ang (Ilokano)
-First Philippine Folk Epic
• Ibalon (Bikol)
•Bidasari (Muslim)
-The Epic of Bidasari is the verse translation of the romantic folk fairy tale poem,
-Epic narrative originating from the Bicol region of the Philippines.

2.Myths And Legends
•Myths,explained natural phenomena creation
stories and the action of Gods and Sprits.
•Tackle the natural to strange occurrences of
the earth and how things were created with
an aim to give
an explanation to things.

Example:
"The Sun and Moon (Mandaya)
It is a Myth Of Mandaya.
-The Sun and the Moon were married, but the Sun was very ugly and
quarrelsome. One day he became angry at the Moon and started to chase
her. She ran very fast until she was some distance ahead of him.

•Legends
-Often revolved around historical events of figures blending fact with fiction.
Example:
The Legend Of Maria Makiling
-The legend of Maria Makiling tells the story of a
beautiful goddess who protected Mount Makiling
and provided for the people living near the
mountain.

3.Riddles (Bugtong)
•"Bugtong", short poetric riddles that use metaphor and imagery,often
challenging listeners to think effectively.
Examples:
"Patpat Kong matigas, labas pasok sa butas"
"Hindi madangkal,hindi madipa,pinagtutulungan ng lima"
"Limang puno ng kawayan,isa lang matangkad"

4.Proverbs (Salawikain)
•Wise saying that reflects traditional wisdom and cultural values.
Riddles during pre-canonical Philippines were composed of five purposes (Pre Colonial Philippine
Literature, 2011):
1. To entertain: Before the advent of electricity, families would sit around the fire and the elders would
quiz the younger generation with riddles.
2. To educate: Riddles serve the function of passing down knowledge from one generation to the next.
They require thinking in order to solve them.
3. To titillate: Many old Filipino riddles contain “double entendre’ that were intended to amuse the men
and surprise the women.
4. To curse implicitly. A riddle could be made up against an enemy, rival town, or suitor.
5. To preserve the culture. Riddles communicate the old ways from one generation to the next.

Another Features Of Pre colonial Period in
Philippine Literature:
•Chants
•Serenade

•Serenade (Harana)
-to play a piece of music or sing for someone, especially for a woman while
standing outside her house at night.

•Chants
-Used in witchcraft or enchantments
-Known as "Bulong" Filipino
-Used by our ancestors to ask for permission from spirits or supernatural beings so as not to have bad
things happen to them
Examples:
"Tabi Tabi po" "Makikiraan Lang Po"

The Importance of the Pre-colonial period of
Philippine Literature,it preserves indigenous
cultural heritage offers insight into early Filipino
history and worldviews.
Fosters National Identity and pride, emphasizes
the value of oral traditions and influences
contemporary literature and culture.
