PRECIPITATION REACTION
Precipitationreactionsarebasedonthe
interactionofantibodiesandantigens.Inthis
reaction,twosolublereactantsthatcome
togethertomakeoneinsolubleproduct,the
precipitate.
Anyantibodywhichreactswithanantigento
formaprecipitateiscalledPrecipitin.
Precipitationassaysareperformedinsemi-solid
mediasuchasAgarorAgarosewhereantibodies
andantigenscandiffusetowardoneanotherand
formavisiblelineofprecipitation.

Precipitationreactionsareserologicalassaysfor
thedetectionofimmunoglobulinlevelsfrom
theserumofapatientwithinfection.
Precipitationreactionsarewidelyusedin
MedicineforanalysisofHormones,Enzymes,
ToxinsandImmunesystemproducts.

ItiscalledasanadaptionofSRIDandmore
rapidthanSRID.
InRocketelectrophoresis,anegativelycharged
antigeniselectrophoresedinagelcontaining
antibody.
Theprecipitateformedbetweenantigenand
antibodyhastheshapeofaRocket
(measured),theheightofwhichisproportional
totheconcentrationofantigeninthewell.

Onelimitationofrocketelectrophoresisisthe
needfortheantigentobenegativelychargedfor
electrophoreticmovementwithintheagarmatrix.
Someproteins,immunoglobulinsforexample,
arenotsufficientlychargedtobequantitatively
analyzedbyRocketelectrophoresis.
