•Chronic Hypertension
•Chronic Kidney disease with proteinuria

Provisional Diagnosis

•Multi-system disorder characterised by new-onset hypertension &
either proteinuria or end-organ dysfunction after 20 weeks or
postpartum
•Ancient texts from Egypt, China & India have recorded that
Primigravidas were at greater risk of seizures
•derived from “eklampsis”, Greek for Lightning
•Term “Eclampsia” introduced by Johannes Varandaeus
•Lacroix is credited with distinguishing Eclampsia parturientium from
epilepsy
•Association of convulsions, oedema & albuminuria reported by John
Lever in 1843 & differentiated it from “Bright’s Disease” ie
Glomerulonephritis
•Hypertension was recognised as a feature of eclampsia by John
Ballantyne in 1885
