MEANING OF PREPOSITIONS
•Prepositions are the words which express the
relationship between different words . They
link the words to each other.
•Mostly prepositions come before nouns or
noun phrases therefore pre means before and
position means place of occurrence.
•Eg. The book is onthe table.
The show starts at3 O’clock .

AT
•The preposition ATis used for showing exact
point of time.
•Eg. My school starts at7.30 am.
•Preposition at is also used for showing
location .
•Eg. She is atoffice.
He is athome.

There are five different types of prepositions:
•Simple prepositions
•Double prepositions
•Compound prepositions
•Participle prepositions
•Phrase prepositions

Rules of preposition:
1. Pair Them Properly
2. Watch What Follows Them
3. Avoid Using Them at the End of Sentences
4. Never Substitute “Have” for “Of”
5. Don’t Confuse “In” and “Into”
6. Try Not to Interchange “Than” and “From”

IN
•Preposition INis used to show that something
is inside a particular thing/object or an area.
Eg.
He is inthe room.
The book is inthe bag.
They are inthe park.

IN
•IN is also used with periods of time.

UNDER
•It indicates a position that is belowsomething.
•Eg. He searched underthe bed.
•She placed the ladder underthe window.
•It also shows something is coveredor below
the surface.
•Eg. The boat lay underseveral feet of water.

Preposition over
•Preposition OVERindicates that something is
in or to a higher position but not touching
something/ somebody
•Eg. They held a large umbrella overher.
•An aeroplaneflew overthe city.
•It also tells that something is from one side to
other.
•Eg. A bridge over the river.

Preposition ON
•ONshows something is in or into a position
covering, touching or forming part of a surface.
Eg.
A picture ona wall
The diagram onpage 5.
Put it down onthe table.
•ONis used for days and dates also.
Eg.
He came onMonday.
The exam will be held onMarch 7 2020.

•It tells that something/somebody is nextto or
at the sideof somebody/something.
•Eg
He sat besidehis brother.

OF
•Expressing the relation between a part and a whole
•Eg.
The sleeve ofhis coat
Indicating an association between to entities.
Eg
The son ofa friend
Indicating a material or substance constituting something.
Eg
The hose was built ofbricks.

WITH
•Accompanied by another person or thing.
•Eg
•He shared a bedroom withhis three brothers.
•Indicating the instrument used to perform
something.
•Eg
•Cut the fish withknife.

FOR
•Affecting, with regard to, or in respect of:
•E.g.
she is responsible forefficient running of
their department.
•To the benefit of:
•E.g.
I got this present foryou.

FROM
•Indicating a point at which a journey or action
starts:
•E.g.
I leapt frommy bed.
•Indicating the distance between two points or
places:
•E.g.

TO
•Expressing motion in the direction of a
particular location:
•E.g.
We are going toa party.
•Approaching or reaching:
