PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS
PRESENT SIMPLE USE : permanent situations, facts or states: *I have one brother. He lives in Paris. * Water boils at 100 degrees. habits or things we do regularly: *I wash my hair every day. *He usually gets up very early. with stative verbs (hear, see, smell, think, prefer, hate, like, believe, want): *I love my job. *He thinks he is a fantastic writer. timetables or schedules: * The film starts at 8:00.
PRESENT SIMPLE SIGNAL WORDS: Always, usually, often, normally, sometimes, never, hardly ever, at weekends, every week, on Thursdays, seldom, rarely, once a month, twice a week… * I am never late. * We go to the cinema twice a month . * They always take the bus to school.
PRESENT SIMPLE FORM : AFFIRMATIVE : I, you, we, they read a book He, she, it reads a book NEGATIVE: I, you, we, they don’t read a book He, she, it doesn’t read a book QUESTION : Do I, you, we, they read a book? Yes, I do. /No, I don’t. Does He, she, it read a book? Yes, he does./No, he doesn’t.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS USE: actions in progress now, at the moment of speaking: *I can’t talk. I am brushing my teeth. actions in progress around now, but not necessarily now : *I am reading a new book. I love it. temporary actions: *I am working from home this month. future plans that are already arranged: *I’ m meeting Sandra at 5 o’clock.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS SIGNAL WORDS: (right) now, at the moment, tonight, today, these days, this week, this month, Listen!, Look! *Look! Mary is playing football now . *Jenny is working in a restaurant this week. *We are going to the cinema tonight .
PRESENT CONTINUOUS FORM : AFFIRMATIVE: subject + verb to be + -ing *They are drinking coke. *She is listening to music in the park. NEGATIVE: subject + verb to be + not + -ing *They are not (aren’t) drinking coke. *She is not (isn’t) listening to music in the park. QUESTION: to be + subject + -ing? *Are they drinking coke? Yes, they are. / No, they aren’t. *Is she listening to music in the park? Yes, she is. / No, she isn’t.
