It refers to when in an action we put emphasis on the person or thing that is the object of said action and not on the person or thing that performs it . PASSIVE VOICE

When the person or thing that receives the action is more important than the person who performs it : The Odyssey was written by Homer ( we focus on the title of the work , rather than the author ) When the “ agent plugin ” is unimportant or obvious : The agent complement is the person or thing that performs or causes the action : He was arrested this morning . It is not necessary to add that the police arrested him because it is obvious . When we want to maintain impersonality in the description of a process : Imagine a food recipe , in which we do not care who performs the action but rather the action itself : Chocolate muffins are made with … To avoid responsibilities : It is very often used in airports for example : Your flight has been canceled Smoking is not permitted APPLICATIONS

STRUCTURING In English, the passive voice is composed of two main elements: the corresponding form of the verb “to be” followed by the past participle. Switching to the passive voice in English will make your texts more formal. The structure of the passive voice is as follows: Direct object + verb 'to be' + past participle + by + subject

RULES Passive Subject: The subject of the passive sentence is the one receiving the action. It is placed at the beginning or end of the sentence, depending on the emphasis desired. "To be" Verb in the Correct Tense: The "to be" verb is used as an auxiliary followed by the past participle of the main verb to form the passive voice. The tense of the "to be" verb adjusts to the tense of the main verb in the active voice. Past Participle of the Main Verb: The past participle of the main verb is used after the "to be" verb to complete the formation of the passive voice. Agent (Optional): If you want to specify who performs the action, the preposition "by" is used followed by the agent of the action (the one performing the action). .

Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare.  Our planet  is wrapped  in a mass of gases. Waste materials  are disposed  of in a variety of ways. I noticed that a window had been left open.
