•Arshiley Gorkey put this movement into motion
•Made Newyork the center of the art world
• The first art movement to influence artists overseas

What is it...
•Abstract Expressionism is an art movement in which artists
basically applied paint rapidly and with force to their canvases in
an effort to show feelings and emotions
•Inspired by the Surrealist idea; art should come from unconscious
mind
•It’s purpose is to create new forms of expression that were more
personal

It’s characteristics...
•Non representational nature
•Rely on gestural brush works
•Emphasis the depiction of emotion rather than objects
•Large scale drawing
•Absence of recognizable objects
