2. INTRODUCTION: =>IT IS BOTH NATURAL AND MAN-MADE DISASTER. => A SINKHOLE IS A WHOLE IN THE GROUND THAT FORMS WHEN WATER DISSOLVES SURFACE ROCK. WHAT IS SINKHOLE DISASTER?

3. NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM SINKHOLE

4. CASE STUDY: # On February 12 th – 2014, a sinkhole occurred at the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky, USA. # The collapse happened inside part of the building, the structure connected to the main building where rare Corvettes.

5. # In this region of Kentucky, known as Pennyroyal sinkhole plain, subsidence and cover collapse sinkholes are commonly found throughout the landscape. # Sinkhole collapses are not uncommon, with many having been mapped by the Kentucky.

6. CHARACTERISTICS

7. Sinkhole Formation: It measured approximately 60 feet long, 45 feet wide, and 30 feet deep.

8. The roof of a previously unknown cave collapsed under the weight of the museum, resulting in the sinkhole

9. CAUSES

10. The sinkhole was triggered by the dissolving of limestone in the ground beneath the museum. This geological phenomenon is known as “karst topography.”

11. Eventually, the weight of the museum building caused the top layer of soil to collapse into the void below.

12. EFFECTS

13. The floor of the museum’s Skydome  vanished into a sinkhole, swallowing eight rare and valuable Corvettes.

14. The damaged cars included iconic models like the 1962 “Black Corvette”, the 1984 PPG pace car, and the 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil”.

15. RESPONSE

16. The museum has decided to commemorate this pivotal event with the upcoming exhibit titled “Ground to Sky: The Sinkhole Reimagined”. This exhibit aims to showcase the museum’s growth and evolution over the past decade.

17. RECOVERY

18. Restored Corvettes: The exhibit features two Corvettes that were recovered from the sinkhole and fully restored: The 2009 “Blue Devil” ZR1. The 1 Millionth Corvette  (a white '92 model).

19. PREPAREDENESS

20. Museum officials commissioned a study into what caused the collapse and how best to repair it, and while the hole has now been fixed, a window on the floor still offers visitors a look into the remaining cave below.
